Why not more posts

Seem like we have a lot of memeber who have 10 or less posts. Seems like we would see more action given the quality of fishing and nearly year-round availability.

Anyone have insight on why we don't get many return posts?

semms you have to ask a question to get a return...
if you do, i'm sure the members will try and answer !

Truer words are rarely spoken but I was referring more to the general amount of posting activity relative to the number of members. Seems like there would be more given the quality of replies offered and the high quality of fishing available in the region.

5-Salt,

Here's my thought on the reason. Many people ask only one or two questions and then comment on the responses but don't contribute to every thread they could. I'm sure most just read and learn from the discussion. Some people just come here to ask a few questions and then go about their business. Me, I'm addicted, so I comment when I can.

Occasionally, these people get the nerve to respond/comment/etc so you see members responding with a small post number.

Cheers,
Alex

In the past members have made mistakes in a posting and then have been slammed by others. If you have a thin skin this could keep people away, just a thought.

My thoughts exactly - thanks Alex

I have only been on here about a month or two but my first posting I asked some questions about winter harbour and 80 people visited it over a 4 day period without a comment. So I made so smart-butt remark about Canadians and was flooded with great information.

Does this mean we like US abuse or just getting used to it???

After mulling over for a few days 5-salts observation, and having read a lot of postings made over the past year, I would suggest that most members only post when they have something to contribute, rather than just to see their name on the screen (as seems to be the case on some other boards).

Fewer posts, maybe, but higher quality, more informative and on topic.
My congrats to the members.

I am married to a Canadian I am just trying to repay you.

:) I have nothing for respect for Canada and its people and if I could ever convince my wife I would move up there. I'm trying to convice her to let my puchase something in the Barley sound.

Joe you have a great sense of humour ! Just keep it coming , as with the previous posts ,I read and if others have already said what I was thinking or has been my experience ......why clutter up the board with repeats ? ; if not or I remember something I tried years ago I will leave something, and as others have said "read through the previous posts and there is a wealth of information there for the gleaning."
Every now and then I reminisce on old places and events but what you watch for is the "keep it to yourself constables" there are some on this site that are quite touchy if you start being explicit in fishing areas , quite probably with good reason, but the written word on the internet can come across as pretty in your face and can p... off some persons .

Thanks Al,

I understand the holding of the information on the specifics of a fishing area but at least give a general idea. I don't think my one week up in Winter Harbour will have much of an effect on the fishing. I'm not that good. I did get some great inforamtion on where to fish and what to use from some of members. I figure Winter Harbour is a once in a lifetime trip I think its almost 400 miles from here and it sounds like the weather and the water are alot more unpredicatble than the south island. That's what I love about Barkley sound if it is to rough to fish outside you can alway duck around a island and you can always catch something. Where are you from? Take care Joe

Hi there Joe , I'm from Crofton on the water just North of Duncan.
I fish all over but mostly Port Renfrew , Barkley Sound, Nootka and have been to the North part of the Island several times but not enough to be laid back about where I go to up there.
Grew up in this area, fished rivers, lakes and the salt chuck since 1957.
The changes to the fishing patterns is unreal......the lack of fish and their habitat is also unbeleivable over the last 50 yrs.
Have fun up north, but watch out, the weather is vicious at times, one of my good friends was a commercial fisherman and I went up there once with him , the seas can be brutal.......but the fishing was outstanding !

Cheers

a note on the weather up there, i was fishing up that way for trout yesterday and heres what we had

-3 to start the day with heavey fog and mist
short sleeve sunny weather around 9
snow/ice rain around noon to the point of a whiteout
gale force winds and sun in the afternoon till about 3
heavey cloud and cold winds till 5
monsoonish rain (window wipers couldnt keep up) till we got home.

thankfully the trout were co-operative or it woulda been an bad day.

Steely

I think we are going to try to get up there in August for the trip to Winter Harbour. We plan to try to fish in Alberni the weekend before labor day of the one after. We are waiting to see what or season down here is going to be like. If they cut us short I may be coming up to alberni and give the sockey a try. Are you still game for going out? If we do get a place I would be glad to let you keep an eye on it. I have been looking at a place on the way to Ucluelet that looks great. It is one of those comunities that you can only live there 180 days a year. I kick my self for not purchasing a cabin which was need rainey bay about 10 years ago. I think it was 15 grand it was one of those floating cabin in a really cool bay.

Hi Al,

I have always wanted to fish Port Renfrew area maybe one of these days. We don't fish the inside much the last time I think was 20 years ago my daughter was 6 months old and we fished Campbell river and ran up an inlet about an hour from there. The water was crazy but so was the fishing. I have heard the water can be brutal I am going up in a freinds boat that is pretty seaworthy and I always wear my orange suit.

I still think the Barley sound is the most beautiful area I have every fished. There are so many differant places to fish and you never can tell what you are going to catch. I caught my first Tyee jigging for ling in 35 feet of water on a pipe jig. That's what make the fishing so fun up there.

We drive through Duncan every year but I don't recongize Crofton. I'll have to look for it next time.

1957 was a good year it was the year I was born. You have seen a lot of changes in those years. I have only been coming to Canada for the past 20 years but it has gotten better in some places. We have had the best 3 years in a row down here for Coho and they where big one. We probably caught and released 40 over 15 lbs last year. I hope the work on the conservation to keep things inproving.

Take Care Joe
