The following area is now declared an infected area for whirling disease (infection with Myxobolus cerebralis): Johnson Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta. The rest of Canada currently remains free of this aquatic animal disease. To view a map of this area and the requirements for a domestic movement permit to move susceptible species of finfish from infected areas to free areas of Canada, please visit the Aquatic Animal Domestic Movements web page:

They should Rotenone the lake and kill off the the infected fish quickly before it spreads further into other Canadian watersheds. They hate to spend the money because treatment is expensive, but the last thing we want is for this to spread into BC. Poisoning off the fish sucks but in a few years after fish are reintroduced it will be back to its full potential. Now it is just a disease factory ready to infest other healthy bodies of water.
