Hello Fellow Anglers

FINALLY!!!!!! Sockeye have begun to arrive off the Fraser that are biting and beginning to hold off its mouth. Today was the first day in which anglers had any success at all, and the numbers should continue to build daily.

Actually, this morning's fishery was surprisingly good considering a pod of Orcas was prowling around nearby all morning. It wasn't "smokin' hot" or anything, but we landed three Sockeye and a Pink, lost a couple other Sockeye around downriggers at the boat, and had about another 1/2 dozen fish on throughout the morning. The afternoon was slower (as if often is...we still managed to land one Sockeye and lose 3 other fish), but there were definitely lots more fish on the sounder in the afternoon than I saw on it in the morning. They were obviously arriving throughout the day, and it will be interesting to see how Friday morning's fishery unfolds if the whales aren't there.

These late-run Sockeye are great fish, and are often much larger than the ones earlier in the summer. Of the 4 we landed today, 3 were between 8 and 10 pounds and bright chrome.

Unfortunately, our Sockeye fishery will be very short lived this year due to their late arrival. As of right now, we are remaining open in the salt water until further notice, but there is another meeting on Tuesday afternoon. They are suppose to give us at least 48 hours notice, so that would give us until Thursday (Aug. 28th) at least. Hopefully we can persuade them to keep it open through the long weekend, but politics often plays a very large role in this fishery, and I understand the Fraser River will be closing this Sunday at midnight to everyone, so political pressure may cause us to have a closure before the long weekend. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

On another front, the light tackle Pink fishery up Howe Sound is finally winding down. The numbers are still there, but they have virtually stopped biting. The next massive wave of Pinks is just beginning to arrive in the approach waters off Vancouver Island, and it looks as if they will be here "en masse" by the end of next week (just in time for the Sockeye closure?!?). The run has been upgraded, and there may be as many as 50,000,000 arriving (that is not a typo!!!). We will be walking on them out there! Looks as if early September will give us another chance to fish these fish with the light tackle (spinning rods, 10 lb test etc...) off the Fraser River, and there should be the odd Sockeye, Coho, and even large Chinook in the mix at that time. Should be a blast!

As of right now I have the following time slots open through the long weekend: Saturday Aug. 23rd (pm), Sunday Aug. 24th (pm), Monday Aug. 25th (pm), Wednesday Aug. 27th (am, pm), Thursday Aug. 28th (am, pm), Friday Aug. 29th (am), Saturday Aug. 30th (am, pm), Sunday Aug. 31st (am, pm). From the second of September on I am still fairly open.

One note about table salmon. If you choose WILD for your table and your home/office parties, you could well benefit from Dr. Al's wild salmon club. Check it out at http://www.SalmonQuest.net . Al and his SalmonQuest Club members have shared several fishing adventures aboard the Predator.

As always, feel free to pass this information along to any associates whom may appreciate the report. If you have any questions, or wish to book a charter, e-mail me davek@dccnet.com), or call me at (604) 329 - 8642.
