UV rays on plastic!

I know scotty is supposes to make their stuff UV resistant, but,as I look at those swivel mounts I have to wonder.Thats a pile of money with a pile of force on them.Electric downriggers I'm talking about.I'd hate to be surprised while fishing and have a mount break and watch my $600 rigger go deep six.
Is this a concern? Are there precautions to take?
I've currently got the upholsterer down there doing canvas and was wondering if I should get covers made for the mounts.

Scotty makes covers for the electric downriggers that pretty much cover the mounts. I've used them for a couple of years, and they have velcro straps. I put them on when trailering, and have taken 300 - 400 KM trips at highway speeds, without losing them. I leave them on in the Marina, and it keeps the Downriggers just like new. They are a black fabric like cordura and appear to be UV resistant. You can order them from any Scotty Dealer. My last boat had Scotty mounts exposed to the sun "in the Okanagan" for 7 or 8 years, without covers, and they did not seem to deteriorate significantly.

Mine have been on for 6 yrs and counting. No problems.

Some like it rough...
Others just puke!.

Thanks for the replies.I've had mine as well for years but got to wondering on the weekend when I went to take my prawn traps out.The scotty bait jars were starting to crumble in my hands. They were unuseable and I had to buy new ones.Made me look at other stuff.

Yeah, their bait jars are basically disposable. Two and a half bucks, no biggy.

It's all about molecules. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I think the covers are a good idea, uv rays are getting stronger and all plastics are continuously drying out, my scotty stuff is looking bleached out and no doubt getting brittle, hate to see a rod holder bust, think I'll replace them, just cuz!

i have 2 gunwale mount rod holders that i ran cable locks
through and then around the boom of the down rigger.
the downriggers can still pivot on the base, but if there's
ever a breakoff the downrigger is not lost.
also a deterent for thieves

so you have thought about it? I was pulling prawn traps on sunday and was watching the bend in the mount.

can you imagine how pissed you'd be if the mount did break off
sinking your rigger, rod, reel and gear ?
personally my face would be red, and the air would be blue !

I don't use the downriggers for prawn pulling. My prawn puller(and most of them)is designed to mount on scotty mounts and use power from the same plug.
