Transport Canada Assessing Social/Economic Impacts

Some of you may recall that 'Thriving Orcas, Thriving Communities' was on the 2019 Summit agenda. http://viea.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2019-VIEA-Summit-Program-WEB.pdf

Transport Canada is now seeking to assess the economic and social impacts of measure put in place https://www.tc.gc.ca/en/campaigns/whales-initiative-protecting-southern-residen-killer-whale.html
to protect the Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW).

This Transport Canada project introduction letter will provide some background:https://eur05.safelinks.protection....d1H9cL4NisbW0DSe2TVSp0ptDCBlvExYw=&reserved=0

Transport Canada is seeking feedback from marine stakeholders on how these protection measures may have affected them, their businesses and their communities.

The Vancouver Island Economic Alliance https://viea.ca/about-viea-membership/what-we-do/
is forwarding this letter and survey link to you in case you would like opportunity to share your thoughts by completing this online survey https://www.quicktapsurvey.com/survey/b00336a6b648409ffa94ef109ccb8156

Your participation will help ensure that the magnitude of impacts of the protection measures are communicated to enable the consultants to make informed recommendations to Transport Canada. The survey is completely anonymous and takes about five minutes to complete. There may be opportunity to participate in more focused interviews, if you are interested in exploring economic and operational impacts further.

Thanks for posting this, I had no idea! Once again DFO has dropped the ball. They could simply enclose a link to this survey when they pump out their monthly or annual surveys. Something along the lines, “If you fish these areas, here is a link”. They could have also sent the survey to those who have written them letters on the topic! They (DFO)constantly complain of lack of info, but do very little to expand participation or solicit info from the fishing community as a whole. Wonder if Admin could post this on the Saltwater fishing forum and Sidney/Sooke fishing reports.

Can you lead this Ziggy info is right there if you feel it needs to be other places.:)

Just copy it up and post away.

We have it up on our Nanaimo SFAC page, and so does Victoria SFAC Facebook. It has also been distributed through our SFAC email mailing lists.

Just did it, we need many more in the public fishery to fil this out. It is quick (5 mins or less) and easy to do. Thanks for posting this as it is very important to give our input to this!

Can you ask Chris to see if he can send a mail out through SVIAC newsletter or maybe on your website?

Done and passed to all the fishers I know.

This is the Trudeau Government looking for ways to keep us off the water. Don’t let them get away with it. Time for the BC Government to step up here. Are they fighting for our rights? Are they investing in our resources? Not so far! Our fishing industry is no different than Alberta’s Oil & Gas Sector, this is uniquely ours. It’s time to own it BC! Come on Horgan it’s time to invest in your citizens!
