Sockeye and Sea Lice

Let's hope that the closed containment system trial around Campbell River is successful so we can protect our wild salmon!

> The Fraser River is possibly the largest salmon producing river in the world. Most of the juvenile sockeye which leave this river migrate north up the coast through the inside of Vancouver Island. In doing so they pass by many industrial salmon farms which are breeding grounds for sea lice, which are known to be lethal to juvenile wild salmon. In this episode we visit with a research project underway in the Discovery Islands off of Campbell River where a small crew is sampling the juvenile sockeye salmon along their out-migration to sea. The sampling crew is finding alarming levels of lice on these juvenile sockeye, which represent Canada’s most important run of salmon.
