snails in rainbow belly

I was fishing in sproat lake (vancouver island) and caught a 3lb rainbow while using powerbait off the bottom. While gutting the fish the belly was filled with snail shells the size of a pea. Anyone out there seen this and what could I use to imitate this food source?

i fish in whistler BC and i find snails in all the rainbows i catch. dont worry about making a fly for them cus they seem happier eating a nice juicy fly. they eat snails when there is nothing else to eat, kind of how a fat person always eats but would jump at a big steak.

Thanks for the response. I tried bouncing a dew worm off the bottom but nothing. I do have some caddis flies (the ones that look like little rock/sticks) I'll give that a shot next time.

Yup, I too have caught some trout with snails in their belly. I guess when their hungry they just basically eat anything that is available <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>.
