Six boaters cold but unhurt after Mayne Island rescue by BC Ferries

How lucky that a huge vessel with rescue capabilities like that happened to be close by when a random large wave of indeterminate source swamped some smaller vessels.

Who knows what would have happened if the ferry wasn't there? Maybe the whole incident would have played out differently.

ferry may have caused swamping?

There is quite a tide rip off Georgina Point at max tide. It's possible that a large wake from a tug or something combined with the rip to create a series of steep chop. But it looks like it was slack at 9:42 Sunday, so it is odd. You never know when sheep happens. Always wear a PFD!

Turns out I work with a guy related to a couple of the people. His story is that they hit something in the water, and the boat sank out from under them. The only pfds they had were actually child pfds, and they were all hanging on to the cooler when they got picked up.

Of course his story also includes 7 foot waves, so...

If they were on the other side of the pass opposite of Georgia Point (west side) then they may have been sucked into the very strong rip that forms in the cove there and there are a set of sharp rocks there just under the surface. At low tides they are very close to the surface. Couple years ago I was anchored in there having a lunch break with the family and letting the kids toss lures around while anchored. As the tide changed and current started flowing hard it was crazy how the water changed in there. Took us a bit of work to get un anchored and got out of there.

Those boaters were super lucky they got rescued and also fortunate the water is a lot warmer this time of year.
