I couldn't make it either.
Anyone else show?

Vut'- habbind?

1) Lengthy update on the salmon returns: some good, some bad, Cowichan chinook almost extinct now. DFO has no clue why some stocks are good and some bad. WCVI chum in trouble. Coho faired well everywhere this year. Robertson hatchery got just enough eggs to keep the Stamp chinooks alive.

2) Halibut stays open 2-2 for the rest of the year. The rec sector bought additional quota for $600k to keep us going so long this year. Next year's restriction will be announced soon - so they said. Less hali TAC next year and maybe no money to buy additional rec quota - so be prepared for severe cuts.

3) Rock fish, ling - same old same.

4) Race Rock will become MAC area which means no change from our RCA regs - no fishing. But don't be surprised if you see FN fish within.

5) DFO is confident they have everything under control and their science is sound based on the data collection methods they use (fly-over, creel). However, they admitted mistakes in Port Alberni - hopefully lesson learnt. They are considering newer data collection methods such as catch computer entry at marinas but probably won't have funding for such. Promised to act fast on Cowichan issue - ad-hoc committee formed but acknowledged that it will take time before we see action. Fraser socks - shoulder shrugging.

Thanks for the update Chris.

I believe the Cowichan run could be one of the tougher species to manage with any degree of certainty as they spend time in both the Straight of Georgia and the WCVI.

Pressure here, pressure there...

You hit the nail LH. No mention of reduced limits again at the meeting. When accountability was brought up by one of the younger participants it was squashed again buy one of the dinosaurs that are unwilling or incapable of change.

Now that we are pretty much the only large group targeting the inside springs maybe we should think about taking a year or two off.....

ok dinosaurs bring on the rant and the blame shifting.

Apparently more than before Cowichan chinook wire tags have shown up in the NW VCI commercial bag. Leads to believe some existing commercial fishery is hammering a substantial portion of the Cowie springs. But that's all there is at the moment in terms of leads. Also, apparently 99% of the hatchery raised chinooks die within weeks of release - rumours of sideffects from poisonous well water at the hatchery.

Also how can it lead to believe anything when there are no true numbers of what is being caught by us. From what I understand the troll fleet on the North end of the island is pretty much gone and can't compare to the 1 million rod days put in by this sector.

Who runs the Cowichan hatchery now? Why wouldn't whoever is running it now be doing a good job? Are they doing something wrong? If it's bad well water its not their fault....they probably need funding to channel river water into it?
Just curious.

???

"Getting someone who knows how to run a hatchery" what kid of a statement is that ?
It appears they do know how to run it as there are Cowichan fish being caught off the West Coast and if you are so sure they are not doing a good job why don't you go down and show them how ?
Nothing like sly digs , inneundo and subtle finger pointing !!!!!

Sorry about that. I was talking when I should have been listening at the meeting and only heard part of the discussion. What I should have said was get the political interference out of the way, get the funding back in place and let’s get on with rebuilding these rivers.

The CEDP Cowichan hatchery is run under contract by the Cowichan FN and they do an excellent job given the very difficult circumstances. The people at the hatchery are really not the problem.

What is needed... more water to rear more fish ... preferably river water as well sourced water is inferior ... but if well water it must be then a special filtration system (as Marine Harvest use at their Duncan hatchery) to take the metal spikes out of the well water... funds to upgrade equipment... and the assistance and guidance of a professional aquaculturist.

DFO has the money for water upgrades (filters and wells) as they secured the 10 million in funds from the government Action Plan funding for laboratories and hatcheries. But DFO have to </u> move on this in a hurry and stop talking about it as they have been doing since the loss of all the Cowichan smolts a few winters ago when the power failed during a snow storm.

Getting the hatchery raising healthy chinook, improving natural river habitat and a predator elimination program are all key to seeing this stock bounce back.
