Saving Salmon and our West Coast Fisheries

A group of knowledgeable and concerned anglers with various interests (both primary and secondary users) within the public fishery got together recently to discuss a plan of action to save our west coast salmon fisheries. Tom Davis chaired the meeting and with the input he received from those who attended he put together a briefing document. This document is intended to be wildly distributed to the public so that overwhelming pressure lands at the ministers door to begin listening and acting in a positive manner. Political leaders have already been sent copies of this by Tom including the Prime Minister and the fisheries minister.
Please take the time to read the document and use it to write your own letters to all the political leaders from all parties. What we want is: Immediately transition to marked selective fisheries in the areas where non-retention currently exists; immediately mass mark existing CDN hatchery production; immediately implement upper Fraser River Chinook enhancement and restoration activities using all the tools in the box and immediately remove the non-retention regulation in JDF and LGS. Finally, wherever it applies ask this question. Do you support the following?- The move to marked selective Fisheries? The Public Fishery’s access to the Salmon resource, including retention of healthy stocks where applicable? If not why not? Basically get them on record.

Did they discuss openings being delayed because of the Fraser river slide? Herd its a very real possibility

Yes there is some worry about a possible delay in the ending of the C&R fisheries in place now in tidal waters because of the slide. It would be another unecessary move that would do nothing to save fish as most late summer stocks don’t migrate that far up the Fraser. Can you imagine the permanent harm to customer relations? People who have already altered their dates and plans to fish after July 15th. Then being told that things at this late date have changed again. Flights, hotels, bookings with guides all screwed up...having to cancel and not being able to rebook because by now everyone is booked up through the time when fish can be kept. If it was me I would never come back to BC.
BTW..the breifing note was designed to make aure we all are on the same page when it comes to the 3 or 4 main priorities we all can agree to. Keeps a united voice from our sector. Please feel free to add your own personal want...ie: fish farms, pinnipeds, herring fishery etc. We just want those in power to keep hearing the topics mentioned in the document from everyone.
