Looking at buying a new reel kinda thinking a Trophy Xl. Also looking at the newer stainless steel peetz reel but cant find any info on them. Has any one out there used one? What do you think?

i ve got a stainless peetz and it is fantastic for the price and if anything goes wrong and it hasnt they fix no charge -plus its made locally - trophy xl made in china

I just got a Trophy for Father's day and I love it. But my favorite reel hands down is my old wooden 6" Peetz. I've had it since I was a baby. I'll never let it go. Peetz in Victoria will do a total restoration for $75. Either way they're both good reels. Buy what feels right to you.

The new Peetz Evolution Reel is the one I was refering to. It's supposed to be a modern version of the classic peetz, roller bearings, one way drag etc.

If you haven't looked at the Amundson TMX5's then you must. Aside from the great look of the reel, the 7 layer carbon fibre drag system is second to none in my opinion. Many of my friends that tournament fish on the Great Lakes have swapped out all of the drags on their reels with carbon fibre (they use level winds though). You don't have to worry about wrecking the drag washer if you forget to loosen it as they don't compress like cork does and don't have any memory in them. Carbon fibre is also silky smooth. I've seen them on sale for $349 too recently. I paired mine with a Shimano Technium and just love it...oh and on another note, you can troll all day and not an inch of line creep. Ask the others that have them on this forum, haven't heard anything negative really.

Tried or owned various brands.....like my new trophy xl reels for the bigger handles. Makes it easier for people with issues like arthritis in the hands. Some people have adapted their favourite reels with the bigger handles.

I like the rapala shift reels!!! The flat handles and large arbour are very nice

I'll second the Amundson tmx-5 also, I love mine. When I purchased mine this last spring guys were selling their Islanders and getting them all due too the great drag system. I also love the billet aluminum knobs, so smooth!!

can't fault the TMX-5's that much and since i have 9 of them now .
i can say very little can or does go wrong. had a clicker screw come undone on one after lots of hours used..
(there will always be one or two that wont be happy or break's or find's fault).
but if your pocket can go to a alloy based reel but can't afford abels or islanders
take serious look at the Amundson TMX-5 the new reels this year have a solid color without the scales pattern

All I've been able to find are the Amundsen tmx4 or the Theron model. Good price on the tmx 4, were does it fit in?

I have a TMX4 I'd sell, great condition just serviced if someone wants to make me a reasonable offer. 1 year old 25 lb maxima and orange backing.


PS... If anyone ever comes across, or wants to sell an RST mooching reel... I'll buy it

The TMX4's do not have the new 7 layer carbon fiber drag system which is a significant improvement with the TMX5's. And yes you are right, the Theron is a TMX5 that PNT customized with kind of celtic graphic on the side. They look pretty cool, but from previous reviews, people either love them or hate them.

Here is a description of a TMX4:

AMUNDSON TREND MOOCHING SPECIALIST REEL This excellent reel features machined aerospace aluminum frame, spool, reel seat and clicker button. The unique design easily converts to right or left hand retrieve. It features a Dual-Pawl drag system with a large scalliped drag knob. The large arbor spool is designed to reduce line memory and increase line speed. The spindle is machined out of 316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance and durability. Three large sealed stainless steel ball bearings. Attractive 2-tone anodized black and gunmetal housing. Gear ratio = 1:1. Line capacity = 660 yd/17 lb test.

There is about $150 difference in price as well. TMX4's are no longer being made so once inventory is gone you're out of luck.

i know the reels well , i bought 8 of them,
my question was to Fishin Zinn , hes selling his ,
mine are the second genration TMX4B1 , there a darker blue than the first gen
imo , i ran both theron and tmx4 last year , i prefer the cork drag hands down of the tmx4

I was just in A&N checking out the tmx5. Pretty nice looking reel. They had them in blue, red, and black...

I agree with the new Theron reels----- I got a couple this year and they are great. Love the paddle handles and that drag system is flawless. Thanks again Rob for the great deal and now if the fish would come down , we can really try them out!!
