Racor Filter Change

I did the regular service on my Suzuki140, oil and filter change, spark plugs, fired up the engine and all was good. Then replaced the racor filter. The same routine as the previous years, the only difference is that I filled the filter with regular gas, maybe a bit old 3-4 months sitting in a gerry can. Then put the new filter back in, primed the puppy and fired her again. The motor sounded rough, gave it 20 minutes idle run but still no change. Took her on the water yesterday and put fresh marine grade gas in the tank. Engine still runs rough, loses RPM at cruising speed and not responsive enough. I was thinking of draining the racor and priming it again a couple of times and if the issue is still there going for a new racor. Any idea what could have caused the issue? Could it be the old gas or is this a faulty filter? Appreciate any tips/ideas.
