Port Alberni Sockeye

Have a trip to China creek booked for end of June. If anyone could give me tips on what to bring, where to go that would be awesome! Looking to go for salmon and hali if possible. Fishing out of a 20' duckworth so should be able to hit most spots. Thanks in advance!

Last week of June is killer. That is usually when the first big push of fish hit the Canal. Early in the season the fish are generally in the upper part of the water column (30 - 60 feet). Later once the water starts heating up, they move deeper. Bring your cooler, there will be 1.6 million fish! Usual gear works. Best fishing is generally around China Creek, but depends on where they school up. The seine fleet won't be fishing from Dunsmiur Pt over to Franklin by agreement at the Harvest Round Table, so that is a good place to start as the fish won't be as stirred up as when the seiners are on them. There will be gill netters everywhere, but seem to have less impact on putting the fish down. Come and enjoy, it will be epic!

Cool. Thanks for the info. Would it be worthwhile trying for halibut or would that be too far out? Sorry for hijacking the thread low tide...

FN sockeye fishery hasn't been doing that well. Fish are not really here in large numbers and those that are, shoot straight up to the lake in short order. River continues to drop down which is good as that will impede the migration somewhat and encourage the fish to hold up. That is when the real sockeye fishing starts. What we need is a whole bunch of hot weather. There is a commercial gill net fishery planned for this coming Tuesday out in Barkley Sound, and that will also give an indication of how many fish are showing. I suspect not too many because we really haven't seen large schools of them in the sound yet. Any day now we should start to see them.

Hali - yes there are some to be had in Barkley Sound and of course off shore. Seems like there are more around this season than last season.

Few fish starting to be caught. Not huge catches but they are starting to slow up with the last week of warm weather which has produced a few days with fish. Not sure how long this will last as the weather for the coming week is looking cooler.
