Plug Re-Paints UV Edition

Well to beat the boredom I decided to set up my high tec multi purpose paint booth and dabble in some paint. I have used UV paint in the past mainly on plug belly’s, eyes and lips. The UV paint is a little tricky to spray and very dull looking and fades out pretty quick. I have also used the UV additive mainly on plug body’s and covered most of the backs with color, leaving me with a UV belly only. This time around I am going to mix the UV additive into the colors and try and get the whole plug to glow. All paint will have UV additive mixed at equal parts including pearls 1 to 1 ratio. I won’t put any UV additive on the face or eyes. So the first color I try is silver and it’s the first time I have sprayed this color so I was pretty excited to try it out. Well this new color is interesting don’t no what to make of it......Next

So after 2 coats of Wicked gloss clear I am ready to turn off the lights. My UV flash light only covers a couples plugs at a time but I was impressed with the results....

That 'aluminum' colour reminds me of when everyone was using plain Luhr Jensen Coyote spoons with no paint they were all the rage and killed a lot of fish.

I like the various Greens too-maybe I was a Spring Salmon in a past life (!)

Everything in my tackle box is glow or UV my dad has three or four boxes of plugs might have to paint them I really like those!

This is such a cool thread.

Great job on the painting. Super professional and so is the photography thanks for sharing.

Any plans do a white with light bluish / pinkish / greenish faint undertones?
Hope to see more as they come out of the booth

Cool stuff, love the colour choices.

Really good looking colours. Now you just have to get the teeth marks on them. Should be easy with the way they look.

Do you have a glow product in your paint? Normally UV kicks off the colours under blacklight. Yours looks like it is glowing too.

Are you going to fishnet paint any other patterns on any of these?

Looks great.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The paints I used are from Createx wicked color line. The 0210 Wicked UV Glow Base was added to the colors not sprayed over the colors. And all colors where sprayed over white base coat.

Was going to get into Fluorescent paints later after I sprayed a few more.During my test I also sprayed 2 plugs with Wicked Fluorescent, 1 was yellow and the other was green. The green plug was the only plug that I have fished before and the rest had never seen the water yet. The now Fluorescent green back plug has been my go to plug last 8 years. When I received the plug from a friend (MT] it was all plain white plug no glow no UV. It was a hot plug after a few years I re-painted the plug pearl white with Glow paint. Since the switch to glow it still produced fish. So being a wood plug after 5 years it was looking like time re-paint.So I sprayed the belly with white pearl with the UV additive. I sprayed the back Fluorescent green over white UV additive. So basically will have to wait and see How this plays out.

The Wicked Fluorescent line paints are acrylic neon color that emit a glow

Here is the best I can do to show the Fluorescent colors, the yellow is so over powering like hi vise reflective tape.

Those look great. What are you using to top coat the finished plugs?

Plugs are a blast to paint and the colors are only restricted by your imagination. I still have a few dozen waiting for me to paint but just have t found the time to get to them yet.

Yeah I add 4030 balancing clear additive to the paints at around 20% as I go through the process. The 4030 helps bonding and helps a lot in spraying in pearls and candy. I was shocked the first time I used this product on how durable it left the paint job without any top coat.

A few years ago I seen a video demonstration on using wicked top coat on the bottom of a skate board and appeared to hold up pretty good. So I started using the wicked top coat. Createx makes a higher end top coat called 4050 UVLS and also is water based acrylic. I have read some good reviews on that product.47334C44-CF99-4659-B72B-C8ADD657EF48.jpeg3AEECC7C-8CE1-45DD-9DEF-31CD2B3FB6E7.jpegEAA7AAFD-D616-49A0-8F47-E6F6BA69386C.jpegB90FD1D6-51EF-4DD0-A384-26C914DEECC7.jpeg33FCFF44-6A9F-4194-9F6F-4520A9236EF2.jpeg

Nice work Chilli, I thought you where a spoon guy? I havnt sprayed any spoons with Wicked colors yet but plan too. I have sprayed lots of teaser heads though.

Ya, mostly spoons but the plugs are fun just to mix things up once in a while.

I’ve played around with a whole bunch of top coats but now use a 2k urethane product. For durability you can’t be it once it cures. Even the overspray that gets on the backside of the spoons needs to be wiped clean with Lacquer Thinner within 18 hours or it becomes permanent. The downsides are is that it can’t be sprayed without proper ventilation. I set up a temporary spray booth in my garage with good ventilation. And I need to wait for some warmer temps for the clear to set up properly. So that being said it would be hard to justify using the 2k clear unless your doing large batches of plugs, teaser heads or spoons.

The guys down south that paint crankbaits often use Concrete Sealer as a top coat. I tried it on some plugs and spoons and the stuff is super durable. The just dip their crankbaits in and let drip dry.

On plugs it works pretty good and is easy to use but in the heat of the summer it tends to soften and can cause plugs to stick together when stored in the sun in Plano type containers.

I tried the Concrete Sealer on some spoons and found that it left tiny spider web crack on the unpainted side of the spoon. The fish probably wouldn’t care but I sure did.

Well I was cleaning up and ready to recycle my paint booth I figured I would paint a couple more.Started with UV glow base and put some silver scale on with my new wicked silver. I don’t waste much time with scale pattern on glow plugs as it’s a waste of time.Anyways I thought It would be interesting to try and duplicate a Island favourite, perfect action plug while I add the netting out.

No eyes on the UV Louie as generous person on the Forum is sending some to try out.
