Oak Bay Wolf shot and killed

This is a PR nightmare for all hunters. It’s so bad I initially thought it might be an ENGO scam to attack hunters, couldn’t have been scripted better.
To me the biggest question/ issue is why the Wildlife guys released the elderly wolf in an area where wolves were actively being hunted. They knew this one was pretty much habituated and used to human interaction and likely had no fear. Also if wolves are hunted in the area to protect the deer and elk population, wouldn’t adding one be pretty foolish on Conservations Officers part?

Funny you mention seals - as primarily a fisherman, I have no issues with a seal cull, but for some reason, the idea of killing a wolf just for sport doesn't sit well - and if I feel that way, the "average" islander/greenie will be more so.
Just to thread drift this one a bit more - curious - are the bag limits set with the hunter being used specifically for their numbers management, or to give the hunter an opportunity to harvest their desired target, with management a separate focus?

It’s a **** storm on Facebook boys. 1000’s of comments. A couple of hunters justifying the kill and getting roasted by 100’s of tree huggers. I just went down the rabbit hole of reading the comments for about a half hour. PR nightmare for sure!! And there’s a lot of people stuck at home on their computers with nothing but time......

I for one think it is dead wrong to say it is the "Same ilk that want ALL your Salmon Fishing closed"!
Many people who support the Sports Fishing industry feel there was no need to kill Takaya for sport.
In particular the people who followed the story from the beginning.

I'll answer my own post by guessing it came from Social media. People should know better than to post things online that can get them into trouble.

I am not 100 percent onside with island wolf killing. Interior wolves different story. They are pretty dangerous, and there are impacts to wildlife are well documented.

But any opening in hunting are heavily science based. This is the truth. Fur and trapping in places like Alaska is heavily monitored, and it is treated like a resource. Wolf was just in wrong place wrong time. You are allowed three according to current regulations.

Pretty sad to see some of the commentary in this issue we have really fallen so far into disrepair on how we debate things and how hard lines are drawn in the sand.

Taking delight in other sides suffering over this is topic is very disturbing.

I think if this Corona virus was not here now, this wolf shooter would be vilified even more. As it is anti hunters will have plenty of fuel for their agenda when this is over.

Go on Twitter and see the comments on the story CBC just posted. I feel sorry for the hunter. They will find him. I never knew tree huggers were such a violent vile group. They scare me. They are the new clan.

twitter isn’t real public opinion either though. It’s mad leftists for the most part. Trump would of got slaughtered in 2016, socialism would win in 2020, the NDP would be official opposition etc if you just went by twitter and online chat

Trying to please people like this is both impossible and dangerous. California stopped the sport hunting of mountain lion, now they pay to have them killed.
Both result in 700 dead cats a year. One generated income and one costs the taxpayer.
I refuse to try to please the insane it is not worth it.

How did this ever get out into the news?

All wolves harvested in Region 1 (Vancouver Island) are subject to compulsory inspection.
When word leaked out that an ear tagged wolf had been reported, the greenies immediately knew it was their pet.
There was only one wolf so tagged on the Island.

Hunting of predators is but one form of management tool to keep their populations in check.
When you lose that, there are others of course, but most are even more triggering to those so inclined.
In some cases there is no fall-back. Seals and sea lions come immediately to mind.
In the case of wolves, the answer is increased trapping (bounty driven) and / or shooting by government employees (often aerial).

As is usually the case when such an incident get so sensationalized, it is simply a matter of the wrong place and the wrong time.
IMO the folks that made this wolf a "celebrity" are as much to blame as anyone else. They habituated the animal to the point it had little chance of survival.
The Ministry is also culpable. Releasing a habituated animal in an area where there was an open hunting season was a Fool's Errand.

Really I am quite surprised it lived long enough to get shot.
In most such situations, the local dominant pack will kill any intruder bombed into their territory as soon as they discover it's presence.

Another $hit Storm that will eventually pass. As they all do.

The first time that animal swam over and was discovered and removed from the Victoria area they should have known it was going to be trouble. It showed then that it lost all fear and respect for human beings and that is never ever a good thing. What did people think that animal was doing, going to go for a walk down Douglas street and look at the shops. It was hunting, that’s what they do, they don’t sight see. First it would have been stray dogs, then your pet dog and if it had to someone’s child playing in the back yard. Didn’t happen but it was bound to. Anybody that thinks any different is delusional and doesn’t understand wild predatory animals. It didn’t swim that channel for refreshment, it was hunting. That animal should have either been destroyed then or taken to an extreme remote location.

Not sure how the politics of MAGA, the Left, is relevant to this thread (and likely those on Twitter and Facebook that I haven't yet seen). There are those who have valid reasons to support a wolf hunt and those who have valid reasons to oppose. There may be a correlation between the two, but conflating this with peoples political beliefs is why we cannot have rational discussions.
