Night Fishing on the Breakwater?

So my wife and daughter went for a walk on the Ogden Point Breakwater last night around 8:00 and saw a couple of people fishing off it in the dark and fog. They seemed to just have lines in, not casting and retrieving. What could they be going for?

My guess is rock fish, sea bass and hoping for that 65cm ling cod.

There’s a certain group that fish nights at the breakwater. I’m sure it’s to skirt the rules/laws. They won’t care if a species is closed.

Funny I had just looked up ling cod on the DFO site but had only looked in area 20 where it’s open until Nov 15 & looking now at area 19 it is indeed closed. I see that Perch and Salmon Sharks are open in area 19 lol Thanks.

Look again. The southern half of area 20 is closed for Lingcod and Rockfish just like area 19. You can keep 3 kelp Greenling and a salmon if your lucky.

When I was a kid ( a while ago) it was perch at the breakwater using tubeworms we grabbed off the docks in the inner harbour first for bait. That wasn't at night,
