iTroll performance report

I installed an iTroll in the spring and have used it extensively this summer with my Yamaha kicker. I am really happy with it, the ability to vary speed at the helm with a turn of the dial and be able to get the trolling speed precisely without using the tiller throttle is awesome! I am just starting to use its hunt feature - a program to automatically vary speeds, I think it's likely trigger more strikes given what happens when we make turns etc at a steady speed. Anyway this device may be something to consider if you are looking for kicker speed controls.

Thanks for the review. One of my fishing buddies has one of these on his non-remote 8 hp HT Yammi kicker and it works great. I like the change and resume speed function and the ability to adjust speed by just a few rpm.

I am tired of having to keep taping the remote throttle arm back and forth trying to get the trolling speed I want on my 9.9HT remote. Does anyone know if these units can be used in combination with the normal Yammi cable remote throttle or does it have to be one or the other? They are pricy, but it would make us more efficient if it could be added in addition to the existing remote throttle system.

Seems like a pretty slick setup, been reading about it on their website. Id love to upgrade my kicker and to this setup one day.

you still have full function of the normal throttle ...
it just uses a slip linkage on the carb butterfly
well that's how i set my poor man's one up

a good diy kit about $60 and cheap one can be done for just $20

unless you have the RC bits already

servo
servo tester
12v - 6v power reducer

20' or so of 3 core cable
3 amp fuse // on-off switch

home made mounting bracket and slip linkage

and a bit of time

What kit are you referring to I would like to make my own servo throttle control.

Wild Thing... Would you mind posting a couple of pics of your setup? Linkage, mounting hardware, helm setup? It would really help those of us who are not as inventive as yourself!

hi all

will do over the weekend
as i had issues with my slip linkage
i came up with another idea
so will post some new pics

Awesome. Can't wait. That is the one thing that has stopped me from trying this out.

servo is mounted where you can get it to fit
and my carb was slightly different so just used a piece of heavy crimped mono
was using a SS rod with a slip on it but was having issues with it sticking ...

check out the other itroll thread

and for cable i just used 4 core telephone wire

controller servo tester was a more sealed unit
and i just feed the cable out from the front cover

This is what I have used since 1992 when I bought my boat new at Island Marine Center on Lopez Island. Ron the owner showed me one that was already installed on a demo boat. I have replaced the servo motor once in all those years as it was acting up. Was a $40 fix and purchased one from BC Shavers and Hobby in Victoria.

ok was asked again to re post some links for the above DIY kit to get remote servo throttle control

servo may find this kit has the disc/cam arm and bracket that will be suitable for fitting

another source for servo tester....

as you can see in the pic . i done away with a metal rod and just used a wire snap link trace and replaced the blue cam arm with a round wheel type. notice the attach point at the servo get as close to the pivot cam . will give you more turn on the servo tester rather than a hair trigger....lol
hope this helps a few winter sleepers out ....

My update: season 2 completed with flawless operation. . Regardless if folks choose to DIY with off shelf products or buy one ready to install just do it! One of the best improvements you can do.

I've had a Troll King on my boat since 1992 when I bought it new. The closest thing I can find on the market now (looks the same) is a unit out of Tennessee called Controll King.

I have had the original version of i-Troll on my boat for the last three years. No issues other than requiring to replace servo. Excellent product and recommended.

I bought the itroll this spring ... No issues so far .. Works great ... Everyone that fished on my boat this year was really impressed .....
Only feedback
I paid for the "hunt" feature.... Found that it wasn't very applicable and practical for ocean use.... Too many variables for fixed settings ...tides , wind speed , drift... Direction changes .... etc....
Can see how "hunt" would work much better and produce more consistent results / speeds on a lake ..
