The Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society has created a special project for 2017 / 2018. The Wooden Boat Restoration Project will restore wooden boats to be used as on-water and land-based exhibitions and educational sites.

As a member of BHSS Restoration Team the participants will work with other participants and a skilled boat builder/ship wright to restore a number of heritage wooden boats, including hull and interior build-out, followed by finishing work. Skills learned will include lofting, carpentry and joinery, fibre-glassing, painting, wood restoration, simple electronics and engine repair task, and the use of multiple finishes.

Hand tools and power tools used.

All safety clothing will be supplied.

Location: Britannia Heritage Shipyard, 5180 Westwater Drive, Richmond BC (Steveston Village).
YOU WILL GAIN VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE THAT COULD LEAD TO EMPLOYMENT, INCLUDING:
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Work and time management skills
• How to select, use and care for hand tools and portable power tools
• Stationary power tool operation
• Wooden boat building methods
• To dismantle, inspect, assemble, and test components
• Perform measurements and calculations used in boat building
• To work as part of a team
• Calculate quantities and costs for projects
• To design and prepare boatbuilding construction drawings and produce related freehand sketches
• To restore a boat from start to finish, using carpentry, joinery, fibreglass, painting, composite materials and other wooden boat building skills including some basic electrical systems and engine repair skills.
• Emergency First Aid and AED (certificate if over 18 years of age)
WHMIS (certificate course)
