Hummingbird???

my dad just got a new boat, and when we were looking for a sounder, we found hummingbirds were way cheaper than anything else, so he got one. The only problem is that when it gets fairly deep, sometimes only 150' or so, it reads bottom at about 25 - 45 feet. other than that its good, it reads well while planing and everyhting.
does anybody have any input on how their h-birds have worked out?
could it be something to do with where we placed the transducer?
or is this why it was a cheaper unit?
any thoughts?

Thanks Captain Dudds

try turning down the sensativity! I find my humminbird can pick up thermoclines. If this doesnt work then you may have a problem with the transducer or the unit. It sounds like the same problem i had though and it should be a quick fix! good luck.

On my third Hummer, two others in the mix as well. One is over 10 yrs old.

All is well. Good dependable units.

Some like it rough...
Others just puke!.

good, i'm glad to hear they've been known to last. kelly your probly right about the sensetivity, i should have thought of that, i'll give it a try and let you know if it worked.

Are you fishing in the georgia straight right now? If so, your Humminbird just doesn't have the power to penetrate the annual spring algae bloom that we get. Your fishfinder is tracking the densest part of the algae bloom as bottom. Using a manual bottom range setting and adjusting your sensetivity will help. My Matrix model will usually track bottom at over 1500' but with the bloom I loose bottom tracking around 400' Since I rarely troll that deep,
I don't worry too much about it.

well the first time we took it out, we were in georgia strait. we launched in nanaimo. but the second time, we were on constance bank out in the juan de fuca strait. the water seemed to be quite clear, but its possible the algae didn't start until it gets a little deeper. we'll have to try the manual bottom range setting and see what happens.
