I have just bought an older Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke kicker with push button electric start. I have it’s charging system hooked up to my battery. (My main engine is still the good old “arm start” for now) The problem is that when the kicker is running my sounder does not show the bottom. Works fine when the kicker is off. Also, it works fine when my electric downriggers are under load. Is it possible that the voltage regulator may be gone? Is there some sort of resistor I could install on the power cable of the depth sounder? Just hoping for some advice before I pay the big electrical troubleshooting bill at the repair shop.

for what this is worth, i understand you should run your
depth sounder separately from other electronics on the boat.
If your main wiring runs down the right side of the boat, then wire your sounder down the left side.
i guess it will pick up interference from the other electrical
connections.

Seems like interference from the charging of the battery. If you have two batteries run the sounder off the non-charging battery (http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/...ghlight=interference&highlightmode=1#M1017137). Another possibility, maybe the electrical incoming current from the from kicker is near the transducer cable of the sounder.

maybe the spark plug is causing it.what is your spark plub number does it start with BR?
