This email is to notify you and your organization of opportunities to provide comments and feedback regarding protection of species at risk in Canada.

An order was published in the Canada Gazette I proposing listing of Basking Shark, Misty Lake Sticklebacks, and West Slope Cutthroat Trout under Canada's Species at Risk Act (SARA). The public comment period regarding the proposal to list these species and afford them legal protection under SARA ends January 4, 2010. The draft Policies for Species at Risk have been posted at: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/species-especes/consultations-eng.htm

The purpose of the SARA policy suite is to explain the federal government’s policy intentions for meeting its obligations under the Species at Risk Act. The policy suite has three primary objectives:

to clarify the intent of authorities and provisions under SARA;
to establish guiding principles for implementation of the Act; and
to clarify understanding of roles and responsibilities for various jurisdictions involved in species at risk protection and recovery.
The SARA policy suite includes a total of five related policies, one for each of the five components of species at risk conservation, namely: Assessment, Protection, Recovery Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation

We encourage you take this opportunity to provide feedback on the draft SARA policies via the comment form on the website. The consultation period ends February 5, 2010.
