future of industry is on land | Vancouver Sun

Great article....... This should be on NATIONAL NEWS, every BC Network.

Rid our Coastlines of this TRASH Farmed Salmon.

It dOES nothing Positive but all NEGATIVE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT PERIOD.

Great op-ed
What will it take for DFO and both Provincial and Federal Governments to get on board?
Clearly it's time for a change in Fish Farm policy in Canada.

Every where around the World....... Any where Sea Side Net Fish Farms have been ........ Wild populations of Salmon have been DESTROYED.

ALL our neighbours Alaska, Washington, Oregon ........ They all are doing the RIGHT THING and moving this Poison
Off the waters and moving to land or removing entirely.

Wake Up Governments of BC and Canada......... Your past management is destroying our Wild Salmon......oh and KILLING the SWKiller Whales.

I support the removal of these farms from BC waters, or at least waters with significant salmon runs for a number of reasons. Land based farms are the future, but for the most part these can be located almost anywhere (a huge one is planned for Florida) and BC's high land costs make it unlikely that BC will be the place this industry will take off. Any place in Coastal BC with access to decent infrastructure to build the facility and access to transportation hubs will be just too expensive. The Facility in Port hardy is an example of one that is in an area with low land costs, but not great access to infrastructure or markets for the product and can not make money despite currently getting a premium for its product. That premium will evaporate as the land based supply grows.

Oregon never had them, Washington is phasing them out, but Alaska decided to allow Salmon "ranching" instead which uses native species, but may be doing at least as much harm as Atlantic farming to the ecosystem.
