Fugly-2 -Less Fugly-The rebirth of a Legend...

That's some real Mcgiver stuff you got goin on there Mike.;) eman

Yah I was gonna say it looks a bit primitive, but I would use wooden Popsicle sticks hot glued together before I would use an EZ Steer system. Words can't describe how much I hate EZ Steer.

Just search it on this forum.

I have an EZ steer from my mercruiser leg to my kicker (also a Mercury Pro Bigfoot) and it works just fine! I leave it on all the time, I do have to do a little syncing between the kicker and main, but it works OKey dokey.

That is a cool rig Mike. I see a cable to your shifter. how does that work?

I don't know if this will work for you but this is what I did

I still have the bracket we made last year and the bar ends.. That is the closest i have seen yet..

Mine never synced properly from day 1. Followed the instructions to the tee. Called customer service. Less than helpful. The thing would pull apart on every turn. Crank it down. Still pull apart. The only time it ever worked was when I cranked the detentes so tight it was effectively a straight bar. Then I discovered the ready rod ball joint method and never a problem. Sold the EZ Steer on this forum the next day.

I Really think the offset might be too much for the eze- steer..i think a custom rod set up Like Mike_R has might be possible tho.. Sculpin what do you think?

It's just some ready rod bent to shape with ball joints that bolt on to each outboard and spring clips that screw onto the rod. Sorry I can't remember the brand.

You might be able to attach one ball joint to your tiller.
Brand name is Stearns. The stainless one with brackets that fit the main motor runs about $60.00. I have one and I really like. Far superior to an EZ Steer and far less dangerous than trying to hook up when off shore. ;-)

Need more photos....... :)

Are you able to get out that far to start that thing safely?

Are you going to clean up the bottom paint or remove it?

When are you going to take that boat out for a spin? Be sure to take more photos when you do

BuzzBomb said what? :) What does he know :) LOL Sorry Chris

Lol you sound like my wife. Jeffys got his work cut out for him in the steering department ( I know just went through the same thing on my DE) but seems to have enough prop depth and lots of hight to keep out of back rollers.

On the engine in front you should have a threaded tab that sticks out. It looks just like that one above.... The only thing is on old motors it doesn't stick out that much and you may need to extend pivot point (LOLOL that sounds bad )Get a simple 1" x 2 to 3" stainless drill two holes... You attach and bolt/nylock nut to your motor, and than attach the threaded ball joint to that...Don't put that cheap panther bar there frankly POS.. I went thru two of them rusted out/screwed up... HC and I think Trotac have the one you need its that's totally stainless..Its 100.00 machined locally ..Its a threaded rod with then ends all machined completely solid ..Bend it like that one you see up in pic...Like a slight S..On the Yamaha on mine it had a place to put the other threaded ball joint... All you do is simple connect or disconnect... Dead simple.

Quite frankly I think EZ steer sucks complete butt, and I am not looking forward to putting it on my boat... Only reason is I am going outboard to inboard...Trust my Jeff the system works awesome. I ran exact setup as you... This system is good because you can unhook it inside boat not leaning over to get to in water like EZ steer.

I ran that system last year, all i would need is a lengthened ty bar bent in that funny angle and a extension bar off the front of my kicker that would either disconnect or tilt when the motor tilted all the way up for travel...

Never thought of that but dont want to drill holes in it,with the tiller arm where it is at now it does swing free above the transom.

That tiller arm that is aluminum and rubbing. I would add a strip of UHMW plastic to the bottom. As to drilling the tiller arm, just build a clamp to go around the arm. Dr use the tilt switch screws.

Thanks califbill, my kicker is a couple of posts back but i agree with you , a thin sheet of UHMW would help to keep mike_r's tiller handle from wearing out .

Pretty Much impossible to use a steering bar out front, we re- used existing holes from the previous kicker bracket, going to put the boat in today but Buzzbomb said it looks good where it is, sits pretty high up but i would rather that then have it submarine on me..

Didn't you have enough room to mount the kicker on the side of your big motor in the splash well? My buddies double eagle has the kicker mounted there, it does rub a little trimmed up but steers fine. Will get a pic for ya.

Imagine in picture three if you turned the main to the left, the steering cable that goes thru the tilt tube extends further over to the port side..

Nice gear man can't wait to see a pic of that dash all rigged up.. One thing I did to my kicker ya might want to look at is an hour gauge, just to keep track of when services are due.
