Fraser River sockeye salmon not immune to lice dangers off B.C. West Coast
4 hours ago

VANCOUVER, B.C. — A B.C. environmental group fears lice infestations from fish farms in northern Georgia Strait have the potential to threaten Fraser River sockeye salmon runs.

Raincoast Conservation Foundation says genetic analyses confirm a majority of juvenile sockeye caught near northern Georgia Strait fish farms were from Fraser River salmon runs, including the world famous Adams River run near Kamloops and a highly threatened run from Cultus Lake, just east of Vancouver.

Sampling in 2007 and 2008 in waters east of Vancouver Island revealed 90 per cent of juvenile sockeye were infested with one or more lice.

Environmentalists believe such infestations are linked to declines in B.C.'s pink salmon stocks.

Now Raincoast spokesman Michael Price says the parasites seem to affect more salmon species from more areas than previously recognized.

Watershed Watch official Craig Orr admits the implications of the latest figures are still being assessed but believes the connection between lice and declining salmon stocks raises concerns.
