Im trying to research, what is leagal and what is not,, do you have to have them over a certain weight or not, what is best drum or disc..Thanks:)
 
Any trailer over 3500GVW require brakes'surge or electric.Any trailer over 7000lb gvw reqire electric or vac brakes. hope that helps

The cheapest is the best. I find that launching in the salt water kills my breaks. Lucky to get 2 years out of the electrics.
 
works out to about $350.00 a year . looking at ss kodiak disk brakes hope this will be the answer
 
Is that 3500kg the capacity of the trailer and trailer or is it what the trailer is carrying and the trailer?[?][?]
 
My 'lectrics are 7 years old, and yes, they will sieze up from time to time, you have to get in there with some grease and a hammer.. _BUT_ When your trailer starts to jackknife, and you slam your brake controller on to full and it straightens, they are worth thier weight in gold..

I went to electric and never looked back.

- From 2,800 kilograms and up the towed-vehicle brakes must be able to be applied by the driver of the tow vehicle.
• Motorhomes (only) may tow motor vehicles via a tow bar without brakes hooked up on the towed motor vehicle, when the towed motor vehicle’s laden weight (weight of towed vehicle and its load) is:
- less than 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds), and
- less than 40 per cent of the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the motorhome towing it
• Motor vehicles with a laden weight of 2,000 kilograms and over towed by a motorhome must have brakes and breakaway device hooked up.
Preparing to tow
• The vehicle-on-tow must have valid licensing and insurance.
• Only one (1) trailer may be towed at a time (a car dolly with car are regarded as one trailer).
• All vehicles being towed via a ball hitch must have safety chain(s) or cable(s).
• A recreational vehicle towed via a 5th wheel hook-up does not require safety chains or cables.
• All vehicles being towed must have lights connected to the tow vehicle.
Maximum widths for Recreational Vehicles
• Maximum total overall width for recreational vehicles is 2.6 metres (8 feet 6 inches).
• Mirrors (only) may exceed the width of the vehicle by 20 centimetres (8 inches) on each side.
Maximum lengths for Recreational Vehicles
• Maximum total length for a motorhome is 14.0 metres (45.93 feet).
• Maximum length for a towed recreational vehicle is 12.5 metres (41 feet).
• Maximum overall length for a combination is 20.0 metres (65.6 feet).

20ft Alumaweld Intruder
 
I have a tri axle trailer to tow my boat, and I think the axles are rated for 2500 lbs each if I remember right, will be more if anything..
My boat is 5000lbs dry, I have about 1200lbs in engines and have a 600 liter fuel tank. I think Im probably running realistically at about 8000 lbs. total. I have two axles with surge brakes, no brakes on the third axle. Am I a moving violation? I service things regularly and the brakes really work well. Opinions?

not sure...but the wording is 'brakes on all wheels'...so I guess you'd need brakes on all 3 axels. That being said, they also say they're focusing on abviously overloaded vehicles, so you won't likely get stopped.

My trailer needs all new brakes...do discs last any longer than drums?
 
Regs state brakes on all wheels, so best to add a set to that third axle to be legal. I would also go with electric over hydraulic brakes for that big bad boy. Kelly is 100% correct that you want to be able to hit that brake controller unit to stop any trailer sway. A friend of ours was killed along with his son when he could not control the swaying action of the trailer. How much is your life worth? :)
