DFO Mismanagement and Wasting Chinook

Now you know where our 35% reduction went dead in sockeye gill net fisheries

No surprise

Part of it is also DFO’s miss management, instead of having fsc fisheries earlier in the year on critically endangered chinook stocks. They could of allowed chinook to
Be retained in Econonic fishieres but count towards their fsc catch. Similar to what they did on the west coast with allowing rockfish to be retained as fsc in the new native troll fisheries

Even more exploration and less conservation

Truth be told Kenny’s just mad that he has rules. Suck it up if you want to sell your catch deal with the commercial rules

However what does this have to do with DFO allowing critical Chinook to be wasted?
Maybe start a new thread.

This type of behavior should not be tolerated.

I don't understand what behavior you are talking about. From what I see in the video. the guy is trying to fish as he is allowed to by DFO and expressing disgust at the waste of our precious resource as mandated by DFO regulation

What is typical is apparent misunderstanding of the issue/video:

It's a small Chinook; 99.9% likely a Jack (immature).

It got caught in a gill net with mesh size designed for smaller Salmon like the Sockeye being targeted; mature Chinook are too big to get caught in the net. It is possible that this method of fishing is has less impact on Chinook than sports fishing.

No doubt there are cases of "bad netting" on rivers, I just don't think that this is one.

The commercial boats have cameras to monitor catch to keep bycatch it has to be proven. Same thing should happen here. Instal boats with fisheye-lens go-pro on a pole. DFO should allow bycatch as proven with recordings.

What are u smoking? Sockeye gillnets hammer chinook just look at the test fishery.

Eric that is not a Jack.
That is a mature spring, most likely headed to the South Thompson.
Wildmanyeah is correct...the sockeye grids absolutely hammer on springs, especially when the majority of your springs are in the 8-20lb. Range on the Fraser right now!

Admin can u please change the title of the thread to - DFO mismanagement and Wasting Chinook.

Capilano still waiting for you to forward this to your friend in the media.
With all the troubles our resident killer whales are facing this problem needs to be addressed.
And Ken needs to understand that rec guys are only open to 1 adult and 3 jacks a day. Not 4 adults!

How do you know it is not a Jack?

Your jacks on the Fraser are 10 to 16inches right now.
That is a 6-8lb doe Chinook.
Thompson has a huge run of jacks right now...that is not a jack in the picture.
Spend some time on the Fraser in August and September and educate yourself...actually see our Fraser stocks first hand if you disagree that it's not a jack.

Got to hand it to you Whitebuck - never before seen someone who can identify sex of a Salmon plus it's age from a video.
