Big Win for Atlantic Salmon

Atlantic salmon group strikes deal to stop Greenland fishery for 12 years:

Some of the highlights:

  • Atlantic salmon from more than 2000 rivers converge off Greenland and the Faroe Islands
  • Up to 80% of salmon caught are from Canadian rivers
  • The deal essentially buys the commercial fishing rights from numerous small, mostly indigenous, fishers
  • The protected treaty right fishery of native Greenlanders will continue but is reduced from 45 tonnes to 20 tonnes
  • The money for the deal is 100% corporate and individual donors, no government money was involved
  • This is a continuation/extension of a previous deal
  • The deal is expected to be worth up to $4 million
If anyone’s followed this issue in the past they’ll know this is possible because of the extreme value of the Atlantic salmon sport fishery, with anglers happy to pay in the thousands for a single day swinging flies on a section of river.

While I know access to our fishery is a common right, commercial and indigenous harvest is a key factor limiting our opportunities. If we could organize to harness the voice and economic power of our whole sector, including the private businesses and industries that benefit from our sport, I think something very similar could be achieved.

Cheers!
