Aquaculture; improving????

I think JT will say anything right about now. I doubt the farms will be put on land. Lastly 5 years is too long. We only have 3 cycles left now.

People outside of the PNW generally don't know salmon - or how bad the farmed stuff tastes in comparison to wild salmon.

The eat wild salmon campaign was very successful jimmy Patterson should be proud.

So why move them to land at all?? Just kill the industry I’m sure there is enough wild salmon for all of us to eat.

In a controlled environment, their product would not be exposed to the cocktails they are exposed to now, which might actually make eating the farmed variety a healthy option. If you actually read the link, you would see what Marine Harvest (Mowi) says is found in their fish.
But I do agree with you, why farm protein at a net loss in the first place? I'm just hoping that their feed is improved to a point where they don't need to pull all the forage fish from the ocean to feed their Farmed Fish. As you read in an earlier link, this is becoming a major issue with population crashes around the world directly caused by the Fish Farm Industry..

Not leaving people that support FF much options on who to vote for. The Liberals released their platform last and copied a lot of the NDP and greens stuff. Guess they don't want them pulling votes from them.

The Industry is also facing pressure from FN groups who are asserting their rights on traditional territories. There are 3 fish farms in Esperanza Inlet. all of which have been closed down for production since the late spring. The FN groups in the area do not want them producing, and the nets have been out of the water, despite attempts to buy FN support. It could be very beneficial for the nets stay up on the decks through the spring migration of smolts, as outgoing young salmon from the Tahsis, Leiner, Canuma and a host of other small rivers and creeks in the area must pass right by those farms in the narrow inlet on their way to the open ocean.

no shortage of negative Fish Farm News these days...it is EVERYWHERE!!

Problems with Condensed Space and Waste
Concentrated fish can mean concentrated waste. Combined with uneaten food pellets, fish waste can impact the local environment by polluting the water and smothering plants and animals on the seafloor. There are also concerns that diseases and parasites—common occurrences in crowded pens—are spread to wild fish.
When Farmed Meets Wild
When net pens are located near the migration routes of wild fish populations, there is the potential for on-farm diseases to be transmitted to passing wild fish. Pesticides and antibiotics used to control diseases and parasites can also be discharged into the environment, impacting local species.
Issue: Chemical Use
Many types of aquaculture require chemical treatments for a successful harvest. The amount of active chemicals released into the environment determines their effect on other organisms and human health. Frequent application can reduce treatment effectiveness and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria can affect our ability to treat human diseases.

Yikes looks like we won’t be eating wild salmon as an alternative atlest not from bc.

That notice is missing some imp. info. There are numerous separate MSC listings by species & fishery that feed into some markets. Which one(s) lost MSC certification? and strangely enough - nothing on the MSC webapage about it neither: https://fisheries.msc.org/en/fisheries/british-columbia-salmon/about/

Where did you get that notice from, WMY?

The way the letter reads kinda seems like them all chum, sockeye and pinks.

I guess we will have to buy from Alaska if we want a source of sustainable salmon.
