Alberni Inlet 2015

View attachment 19139Fish are at all depths but the biters are mostly deep this year... yesterday best at 120 ft. I never fished this deep for sockeye. Quite a few fish with open sores on skin. Sea lice I think. Still a small percentage of big fat silver ones. The fish are generally skinny this year. One of the greatest sockeye catch years ever.

I have never seen a fish looking like that before. Maybe it swam right to Fukushima and back.

Crazy good out there today. Bite started around 630, took fish from 30-200 ft didnt really seem to matter. Easy limits for the boat.

we were out there today and lines in the water by 530 near Dunsmuir. Went an hour and only boated one (was 1/3 at that point) and was wondering what the hell was going on... think we were too shallow as started at 40-60ft. Many fish were a bit darker but fish jumping everywhere.

pulled the gear and ripped out the inlet a bit further and got into a fresh batch of chrome fish between 70-90ft. couple double headers and some consistent action for an hour and we had the limit of 8 by 730am. average size about 5 pounds, had a couple nice ones up to 9 lbs.

As for the red-spotted fish. i noticed a couple of ours had a few marks on them too - looked like scales missing from ? lice and minor abnormalities but nothing significant. Of note though were two smaller ones that i released at side of boat - about 50 lice on each one including all over the head and everywhere on the fish, havent seen them all over a fish like that before... ? could be same reason as the red-spotted sockeye in previous post.

Took my 5 year old nephew fishing on Sunday.
FWIW the sockeye that we brought up aren't pretty any more. We kept some and the meat looks fine, but the skin shows distress.

Talked to a fisheries officer, the "sores" could be sea lice (doubtful but possible) or, he thought, more likely stress induced as the sockeye are waiting to make their way up the river. Need a rain to induce them to move.
It's crowded in the water, estimated 350,000 sockeye in the inlet now, more arriving.

Where are you guys fishing. I was in the China Creek area this weekend and they seemed pretty nice for the most part?

Any sockeye still out there?[/QUOTE

still lots of fish. Just back from China Creek, the place is only half full, have not seen it like that before. Very windy in the morning except Thursday so we headed out to Barkley Sound. Made one pass at pill. Wasn't feeling the love so headed to swale. Had our four springs by 8:00, nothing big 10-15 pounds, 3 on anchovie one on a 4" spoon. a lot more fun after fishing sockeye. Stopped at the rockslide just as the wind came up at 11 am to round out the day with some sockeye. Back at the dock at 12:30. Saw fish jumping from swale rock all the way in to China creek so looks like there is still more to come.

We got our limit the other day off of China creek, but it was one fish at a time. My sonar didn't work so we were fishing blind. We got all of our fish at 65ish feet instead of deeper as some have found.
