Halibut commission decision due Friday

Associated Press - January 28, 2010 1:54 PM ET

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Alaska fishermen are anxiously awaiting to hear the International Pacific Halibut Commission's decision on the size of this year's commercial harvest.

The commission is meeting Friday in Seattle. The commission's earlier recommendation, issued in December, would cut the amount of halibut that Southeast Alaska fishermen could catch this year by 26 percent over 2009. In the past five years, the Southeast fishing quota has gone down by 65 percent.

Sitka fisherman Kathy Hansen tells the Juneau Empire that the hours leading up to the decision are "nail-biting agony." She's executive director of the Halibut Coalition, an advocacy group representing the commercial fleet.
