Adventure Fishing?

some friends and I have recently gotten into 4x4ing with jeep cherokees(not stock obviously). Coincidentally I also happen to be an avid fisherman. anyway to get to the point, does anyone have some suggestions for remote lakes that have a good 4x4 route that could make a cool day trip from Nanaimo. we have a canoe that could be put on the roof as well.

purchase "a backroads mapbook" for Vancouver Island.

Seafood, it eat, then catch more.

A buddy of mine has one, I was just wondering if anyone wished to share some firsthand experience. And dont worry we're catch and release types with trout(get more salmon then we know what to do with).

Heh Eagle Eyes how did your fish turn out from The Brown's Bay Derby?
I still have lots of candied and smoked left sure is goooood! I use to live in Nanaimo and would do alot of 4x4ing but like many things in life due to the destruction and lack of respect for nature by a few parties, many of the roads that lead to the lakes on and around Benson and Nanaimo have been gated or HUGE Ditches (TANK TRAPS) have been put in place to stop even the best 4x4s from getting through. You use to be able to get to a few of the lakes by following the road past the Waste Lands motocross track but the last time I was up there we had to take 2x6s and bridge are way over these ditches. Wish you all the best in your winter adventures and look forward to meeting you fishing on the salt chuck this spring or summer!!!

funny you talk about the tank traps, last weekend I was at that exact spot planning how we will cross that in the spring or summer when the water(looked like about 10 feet deep) is gone...a buddy of mine ran a 4runner through so it might happen at some point. But I am pretty disgusted with all of the crap people dump up there as you said- its sad and reall gross. and that smoked chum was just awesome like you mentioned, I'm recruiting my uncle to come on a chum trip next year hopefully, man that was a blast. u been out atall lately?

and thanx again to blueorca for the tips on the chum fishing!!!! theres no way i would been sucessful without your help

Agreed cheers to Paul for the tips and making me realize that salt water chum fishing is very under rated. Yes I agree Browns Bay Derby For Sure It Was A BLAST !!!

I haven't been out but must get out soon before I chew someones head off do to the withdrawl from my equalizer fishing !!! Might go river fishing for some winter steelhead

I don't know how the access is now but we used to go to Echo and Panther Lakes some years ago. Great on the fly too and I think that Panther was a Fly only lake.

You get there through the Nanaimo Lakes gate.

Behind the logging place in nanoose. Go to the werhauyser place turn in along the highway towards mt arrowsmith. On the right is a small toll booth. You need to check in and get a map. After that you follow the map to boomerang or rhododendrum lake. I go to rhodo infact im goin this weekend. You can flyfish from shore tons of cutties. These lakes where frozen over with about 4 inches of ice but im sure they thawed. Any lure works! The main part of the roads not to bad but the side roads would be awsome!Go to the back of rohodo It has better fishing and you need a 4*4! If any other help is needed post or email me. oh yah i have lots of pictures!

ya we usually just rally from dumont straight to boomerang, not too hard of a trail really(we may try some of the other lakes around there tho). Anyway send me some of those pics if u want?

rohodo is harder to get to the backside its really rough. bring a chainsaw if u go a bunch of trees fell from the snow.ill send the pics

ya chainsaw is a definate...one buddy spent 3 hours cutting his truck off a tree last year with a stupid small toothed saw.
