The “source “ that you “heard it from” is mistaken. Same sizes still apply for overs and unders. The new fisheries order that amends the previous rules also give allowable measurements for Hali’s that have had their heads removed during filleting or cleaning, i.e. what’s known as “head off” measurement.. Your source probably misinterpreted those measurements.. The unders have a max head off length of 69 cm, and the overs have a max head off length of 97 cm’s

One would think the owner of a Marina would not grossly misinterpret such an easy amendment  but yes online it still reads 90cm online for the unders. And says it’s a daily limit of two under or one over. Should always be this way. The head off size limit has been in place since the size limit began iirc...

I heard the under size is up to 96cm?
Cut and paste from the notice yesterday:
The daily and possession limit for halibut is either of:
---- one (1) halibut measuring 90 cm to 126 cm in length (69 cm to 97 cm head-off), OR
---- two (2) halibut, each measuring under 90 cm in length (69 cm head-off).

Returned yesterday from critter. Fishing was slow at all the inside spots (I.e. Camel, Hoiss, Coopte) but the commercial opening apparently took 9000 fish on Wednesday night. Found productive fishing up Esperanza way just past Saltery Bay. 45 feet on anchovies was the ticket for us. Springs ranged from 12 to 24 pounds. Very quiet at Critter this year with no American guests. A great trip overall with lots of wildlife.

Esperanza is finally coming on. Tagged out at garden point yesterday by 10:30 mid teens to 24#. Anchovies green teaser head at 44 ft. Saltery was hot on Friday. Waiting for the northerns to make an appearance.

Was just in nootka fishin the normal spots camel ,hoiss, coopte, etc. Slow is right. The commercial quota was 6700pcs and they got it. So hopefully the other nets at the mouth didn't hammer on them too. Anyhow another year of the most beautiful place on earth almost over. Hope this weekend puts a couple in the boat for us.

Ran my boat along with a buddy boat up to Esperanza and fished the 15th -17th, staying at Port Eliza Lodge. Had some beauty weather and was able to get offshore for Halibut.

We fished hard and it was definitely slow for Salmon. No Coho around and it seemed that the usual spots outside weren't holding many Springs. Fished Sandstone, Jurassic, Grassy, Tatchu, Outer Black Reef, etc with little to show for our efforts. It also didn't seem that trolling offshore was productive for us or anyone else. Most of the fish and fisherman seemed to be at Rosa which produced fairly well on the tide change. Most of our action was on small spoons - the 3 inch AP and small coyote spoons worked well for us although most of the guide boats were rolling anchovies. We didn't have the patience to run bait as there were lots of shakers and jack Springs that would hit anything. Springs were eating very small stickleback bait.

All that said, we had a great trip. Our group ended with 9 Springs, most in the high teens and low 20's. Also, did well on Lings while targeting Salmon and the usual assortment of rockfish.

Kudos to Robert and the crew at Port Eliza for staying open this summer and looking after us. Obviously a tough summer for them amidst the pandemic and they did a great job considering the circumstances. Great lodge to bring your own boat to. Truly one of the most beautiful fishing areas in BC with lots of options and variety. Will definitely be back.

Overall fishing has been Slow in Esperanza and from what we hear in Nootka as well. The coho still have not arrived, beginning to think they never will and with all the recent rain the springs have moved on from Rosa and the inlet areas closer to the Canuma river. Offshore has not been very productive for Springs all season, its been an inshore show all year, fishing the rocks and kelp beds, but there doesn't seem to be many left in those areas now. Halibut have still been productive weather permitting offshore. It seems to be winding down a bit earlier than normal this year, and if the coho do not arrive the end of August September fishery will be challenging too.

I concur, the last few days have been a struggle. There is always one last push of fish offshore after the late August lull, with little bait to hold em on the NW corner it might be short lived though.

Heading out to Nootka again on Friday and Saturday. Hope those Coho show and there’s a couple flatties left !

Low rock was a bust this am, hooked 2 landed a teener. Found em at sandstone, hooked ten springs missed a few broke 3 off ended up with a 28 a few teeners and a coho...

Coho were starting to show up at the light house on Saturday. Fishing inside was very slow but the morning bite is on at the mill.

Where is the mill.? We spent the weekend searchin for the bite also. Saw a couple caught low teens at most over at coopte but slow again for us. Still the same though beats workin and its beautiful

Probably referring to the old pulp mill in Gold River.
