  • Dear past, current and future SVIAC Members

We are now starting our 2019 Membership drive. The South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition is a non-profit group dedicated to advocacy and salmon enhancement projects in the South Vancouver Island Area.

For 2018, we lobbied hard on your behalf against the very unfair finfish closures in area 19 and 20. We also sent a representative to the annual IPHC meeting to support Canada’s allocation of halibut quota. In May, we funded, raised and released over 500,000 Juvenile Chinook smolts in the Sooke Basin, making this the largest private enhancement project in the South Island. We plan to release between 500-750K smolts this year at a cost of approximately $80K and we need your support to do this.

This year, we are dedicated to resisting further DFO closures that may affect our area. Concerns include a potential SARA listing for Thompson River Steelhead, further measures relating to the SRKW, restrictions on shellfish and cutting our prawn fishery by nearly 50%. These issues are challenging, that’s why we need your membership support to help us be more successful in our advocacy efforts.

Our membership program is done in partnership with several generous vendors in our area who provide membership benefits to you in exchange for supporting us. These benefits can far exceed the value of your membership fee, so it is a win-win situation for everyone. You can see our membership benefits rewards at

At our last BOD meeting I believe our treasurer told us there is roughly $30K in the bank dedicated to the 2019 net pen and $10,000.00 of that is from the raffle that forum members here helped raise. And a significant percentage of that $10,000.00....thank you!! That leaves us with another $50K to raise to cover all the 2019 budget expenses. Another raffle is planned to start on Feb 22nd on the opening day of the the Victoria Boat Show. We hope to raise another $10,000.00 with the help of the passionate people who either post or lurk on this forum. I know those of you who generously supported the last raffle only have so much disposable income to throw at causes you believe in. You have done your part so all I ask is that you try and convince a friend who has a fishing habit to follow your lead and buy tickets for this next fund raising raffle. Tickets for this raffle will be $10.00 and there are 4 great prizes being offered for a single ticket purchase. The draw date will be May 23, 2019 which will be the Sooke Chinook Net Pen public open house. Come say hi to the BOD members at the Victoria Boat Show and find out what we are working hard to achieve to further your fishing opportunities and how we plan to make that happen.
We also have some great draw prizes for those who have already renewed their SVIAC 2019 memberships and those who either buy a new membership or renew before the end of the boat show will be eligible in the draw. Prizes include an auto inflating Mustang PFD, a Vodka gift kit and an assortment of SOG knives/tools and a metal halide outdoor wall light. These are all prizes left over form the canceled 2018 JDF Derby that the sponsors wanted us to keep and generate funds for the cause. I will post more details on or after the weekend, still waiting for the gaming branch to confirm our raffle license.
