2016 Sooke Reports

Sounds like it was pretty bumpy, and tomorrow morning will be cold. Not much wind this morn at Gordon's, Probably give it a miss anyway. Thx for the info.

Fished the tidelines off the Trap this afternoon from 3- 7pm out in 500 ft of water. Hit these guys about 4:30 at 110ft on the rigger. One on anchovie and the other on a white hootchie. Started at 45 feet and worked our way down, and back up again when things slowed down. Lots of Chinook shakers but that was it for the day. Beautiful afternoon on the water

Back out in the solo rodeo again today from 8-130. 1/2 with a nice feeder Chinook. Purple/white combo. Didn't see much of any action out there. Lots of fish stacked up from Possesion along the 90' contour and into the harbour. Coho and chums. And lots of sea lions! Looks like they'll be moving soon.

hmmm, rough weather for the weekend. potentially the worst storm in modern history Saturday. Any Vets of the area have an idea of how this will effect fishing afterwards?

Tempted to sqeeze in a fish tomorrow AM before it really sets in, though it doesn't seem the fishing has been worth it. On the fence. will check the winds in the morning and decide.

made it out sunday. only one other boat out there. Manged a double header right off the bat of two small wilds, and lots one other good hit a couple hours later. Saw the whales move through, assuming that had somthing to do with it.

Well after the windstorms and rain of the past few days we thought we would give it one more shot. Out by 9:00am expecting to be the only crazies out there but there were about 4 or 5 other boats scattered around. So we were not the only ones! ;)Lots of heavy rain showers in the morning but sunny periods in the afternoon and dead calm the whole session.

Morning tried all the gear and depths successful last couple of times but nothing but shakers. In fact we were plagued by them and must have released at least a dozen. The very small ones were even out in 550’ feet of water. In fact the larger shakers were in close; when we tried 150’ of water we hit and released 2lb baby chinooks.

Finally around lunch time we ditched the gear and put on the tiny teaser and little herring. Second herring sent down, after 30 minutes, we finally got a decent hit and brought a 7lb fish to the boat. Patience rewarded!! :)We were off Secretary in about 280’ of water , dodging enormous rafts of logs and kelp which all floated close together like a giant flotilla. Stayed in the same area for another hour but no further luck so pulled the gear at 3:00pm.

Will stay trailered up for the next 6 weeks and give the winters a try mid-December. Maybe all those little 2lb’ders will be bigger by then!!:D

P.S. fish had a fresh little herring inside it, so I guess we were lucky enough to"match the hatch".

Was out Sunday for 8 hours and brought home 6 fish...4 coho to 8 lbs and 2 winter springs. Lots of debris in the water from the storm. Big kelp rafts and logs until the ebb moved them to the west. Found fish at 65-70 ft and down 115. Lots of shakers, most were Coho but also a few very small (10 inch) and clipped springs. Used up the last of my 2015 ball up herring that I froze and vacuum packed last fall. Hoping to find a ballup this week before the boat goes back on the trailer for the winter.

Hey Rolly --are you jigging for the herring or scooping with a dip net.
Tom

Dip them, but very few ballups this year, in fact not seeing much on the sounder at all. Out today and got into fish right away with a 8 pound chum, then a 9 pound hatch coho and a double on smaller winter springs. Then the ebb started and only hit 2-3 more keeper fish of which none of them stuck. Used the last of my herring up from last year so hoping to score on Saturday which is the last trip before the boat goes on the trailer for the winter.

Fished 9-11am, out of the Hotel, dragged a hook around the Trailer Park for first hour, trolled back towards the Harbour Mouth for the second. Pretty bumpy and windy. picked up a bbq Winter for dinner, pulled the plug near Secretary when the waves were consistently 4 footers! Hoping for a late coho, but they must all be up river with all the rain. Xena

yeah, thats bizarre - that dorsal doesn't look like any kind of mackerel I can find and the bars all the way down as well? Some sort of weird hybrid. Like a wahoo crossed with mackeral! lol

If I was a betting man, id say thats a bonito! They apparently have vertical bars when in feeding or breeding mode.

Wow. What a weird catch for around here. That's a Bonito!
The fish Deewar shows is definitely a bonita (tuna) but the sooke fish does not have the tuna sawtooth along both sides of the tail so definitely not a
bonita. Had a closer look -maybe a bit of a sawtooth on the tail-maybe bonita!!
