Thinking of a new boat.

How about some thoughts on SeaSwirl.
Looking at their 2901 Striper.

Some like it rough.
Others puke!.

I've always admired them from a distance. Never talked to anyone who owned one. I was in Nova Scotia a couple of summers ago in St. Margaurite's Bay and it seemed that every second modern boat was a Seaswhirl. I also had a good look through one at the Victoria boat show--looks well put together.

Tsquared;

Thankx for the insight. I'm somewhat amazed of the #'s on the eastern shore for a west coast built canoe. That alone is impressive.

Have had my eye on one for a couple of years now. Had a chance to look over one at the Van show last month. Seems as though it's set up perfectly for us.

They are built in Oregon and I'm basically looking for feed-back before I go and do the factory tour 'thing', maybe late fall or...

Their 30 footer is basically a clone to the design of what I own already (Doral 24 WA), just alittle more roomy, better accommodations.

IF ANYBODY HAS A SEASWIRL STRIPER...
I'd really like to know what you think of them, troubles, problems ect. that you have experienced (it sometimes hurts to be honest, I know). As well as all the good stuff - Which I'm sure there's tons of!.

Thanks.

CA;

Probably not much worse for a boat than an unsecured motor bouncing through the jungle!. Sledge hammer comes to mind.

I am hoping to find a few that don't like them. Curious to find out why, when, and how was it resolved. looking for feed back from owners of older ones as well...Aaahhhh the test of time...

I have a buddy who fishes a 21 ft. striper. He motors from bellingham to sooke it's a nice ride.He also bought a hurston,He said the hurston is a better boat.

thanks the runt

Hey runt. Good to hear ya again!.

I as well like the Hurston boats. I don't think the do anything bigger than a 26 though.

As far as being sturdy goes, your buddy doesn't think they compare?. Or was he making reference to something else about the seaswirl?.

I have a 23 ft. Seaswirl Striper. Deep V hull. Rides the waves very well. Good boat, I like them.

Dean,

Have you thought about a Glacier Bay product? http://www.glacierbaycats.com/ If i was looking in that catagory and price range, I would give these boats a serious look. Pretty amazing vessels IMHO. Aside from that, the Sea Swirl boats look nicely built, but for that price, you can also get some very nice welded aluminum boats? I guess it comes down to what you like.

Hey mr. Dean.
It is a 1998 Seaswirl. I have owned it since 2001. Spent the first summer w/ it at Sooke, then the next 3 seasons at Prince Rupert. This year will prob make one trip to Sooke, then one to Rupert. It has a 5.7 L chev inboard. 9.9 h.p. Honda kicker. Now have it rigged up w/ Radar, GPS, Depth finder, Electric Downriggers. Added also a fish cleaning platform off the back, and arch. Looks good. Lot of wieght tho. I find i can have 3 friends on it comfortable, any more is a wee bit crowded. Boat runs good, but then again, any boat will w/ good maintanance, etc. It has a cuddy cabin, which to me, is a waste of space, as will never overnite in it. But you certainly could do that if you wanted to. Just not my bag, thats all. It is the first bigger boat I have owned, so cannot speak as an expert, but have seen an awful lot of boats thats people run, and am happy with mine.

Hardtimes;

I hear ya. What side of the strait do you live on. If possible I'd like to get a chance to look her over...I'll supply the beverage!

Mr. Dean. I live way east of the straight. Near Edmonton, actually, but have some good pics of her, I could e-mail if you like, and if i go to south BC, would be more than happy to take you for a run, and maybe even catch some fish.

Hardy trip planned for June 11-18 Then again July 18-30

Dean

Hey D,what sort of boat are you running now?

And you're going to Port Hardy too? I'm going for the first time in August! Where do you stay? Do you moor your boat there? If so, where's the best place? I'm pulling my boat up there and doing a B&B thing for a week. I'm thinking of mooring at the Quarterdeck. Maybe you can share the hot hali spots when you get back.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

RM.

Still running my Doral. Think I ran into you down at the planetarium last year???.

Anywho, This will be our seventh turn for Port Hardy. You will enjoy yourself up there. Can't go wrong at the Quarterdeck, IV (owner) is a hands on kind of guy and a stand up individual as well. Be advised though to get on making your reservations NOW. He books up solid for the summer months early!. Lots of boats stop there coming/going to/from points farther north. Last year we met a guy that came in on a 30ft sailboat from Japan, solo. Go figure.

It's a good idea to have 'all the toy's' including a back up gps and radar w/ the wherewithal's on how to use it. Gets socked in thick up there, especially for the am run out to the fishing grounds for the Hali's. Has it's share of BIG boat traffic.

Historically the Hali's slow down somewhat during the time you'll be up there...But the Salmon fishery should be FANTASTIC. We catch ho's that tip the 20lb. mark regularly then. 15lb.-18lb. more often though - but all day long if you want. Seems to be a fairly even mix of
hatchery/wild fish also. Real nice Chinooks run through there...Don't forget the rain gear (lol).

Our June trip is to focus on the Hal's and the July stint is for salmon but I should be able to scrape up some flatty's as well. I'll let you know after the fact.

Be warned!. Once you get a taste of the northern rock and then get settled back home, you'll ask yourself every day...Why did I come back?.

Btw. Who will you be B&Bing with?. Actually this is getting a little off track...Send me an e-mail or start a new thread under the general forum.

Dean
