How many Northern Pikeminnow can I retain?

The limit on Northern Pikeminnow(and other non-game fish) comes up comes up quite often on forums. This is something that should be clearly addressed in the regulations to help clear up any confusion. As I understand it, quotas apply only to "game fish" (they're listed in the regs. under...

    Fisherman Died at Capilano River

A sad event. I'm sure as more info is brought to light that we'll have a better understanding of what happened. More questions than answers right now.

Here's something that never really caught on, but I did see it in a store on Vancouver Island (Tyee Marine??) a long while ago (20+ yrs). - - http://skipsspinflyline.blogspot.com/p/what-is-spinfly-line-how-do-you-rig-and.html

    Fly Fishing Only Regulations...?

Once watched a young kid on the Big Qualicum, below the hatchery, back in the "Fly fishing" only days, using his spinning rod with a large yarn fly. He'd let the fly soak, and then trail it below him in the current, and basically "roll cast" it upstream using the weight of the soaked yarn and...

    Fly Fishing Only Regulations...?

In "fly only" waters there is no requirement to use a fly rod or fly line, just a "fly" ,as defined in the regulations and weights or floats may be used. In "fly fishing only" waters there is a restriction on weights/floats but it's not required to use a fly rod/fly line.

    Fly Fishing Only Regulations...?

You can use two hooks on a fly in freshwater, just not in "fly only" waters. (or single hook waters) Tandem hooked flies just don't meet the definition of an artificial fly for the purpose of the regulations. Here's some of the flies available in Balfour. --...

How To Make Double Snelled Hooks

It might be considered as "one artificial lure" similar to the 2 hooked bucktails used for those big rainbows in the Kootenays. (of course on waters with a single hook/single barbless hook designation would be different). Check with your local regional Fish and Wildlife office to make sure, though.

Which hook do you remove on crank baits?

Just a bit of trivia hunt for you -- There's a river in B.C. that's exempt from the single barbless hook regulation. Yes, it's in the printed regulations. (hints - hoops, studs, drop, diamond)

'Rare but troubling': 2 East Kootenay lakes closed after fish species illegally introduced

Seems to me, that a blanket closure like this, does more harm than good. It's punishing all anglers for the misguided actions of a few. There's already a ban on fishing for bass and perch in those 2 lakes ( and all of region 4, see regs). Now they've taken away angling opportunities for...

'Rare but troubling': 2 East Kootenay lakes closed after fish species illegally introduced

Both of those lakes were already closed to fishing for L/M Bass and Perch (as are all Region 4 waters, with a few exceptions). Now they're closed to all angling.

    Bass

Interesting paper from B.C. MOE on invasive species management, http://stopstocking.cowyafs.org/outreach/michalski2007.multijurisdictionalreviewoffisheriesmanagementstrategiesforillegallyintroduced.pdf It's a bit of a long read but worth taking the time.

    Bass

Ring Necked Pheasant, Chukar Partridge, Brown trout, Eastern Brook trout are all foreign species introduced to B.C. They are covered by the regulations as well. Yes, introduction of foreign species should be prosecuted to the full extant of the law, and violating limits should be as well.

    Goldfish Infestation in Dragon Lake.

Interesting read, surprised to see that one of the advantages is "low cost" as the cost is often cited as a reason that it's not used more. I'm not saying it's not a possible solution to the Dragon Lake problem, but having links to Parkinson's could make it a hard sell to the...
