Another successful Salish Sea Spring Fishing Derby held by SVIAC, and what great sunshine!
Congratulations to Dave Aylett on his derby winning 13.0 lb salmon, winning the $1260 First Prize for the biggest salmon ... plus another $750 in the Skippers Challenge. And the Largest Halibut was...
seems like the whole coast - piles in the 10-18lb range out there! Well went with a little later in season this year to shoot for quality over quantity, so fingers crossed.
I have to say, I think its pretty clear we just don't deserve good things. We have over 140000 adult licenses in BC, and only 73 donations with no pulse in 3 days (in what looked like for a few days could have been a decent campaign). There are bigger people/organizations that have supported...
contributed to this as well - we have a big network here and really, this is the first real effort I have seen actually gaining 'some' degree of traction! There are 12000 members here. We can have a big reach and it doesn't take much from each of us to add up.
we found that yesterday as well - first 5 fish at Secretary were all hatchery and double headers too. I actually had to ask if we could have 4 hatch in possession the way things were going. Last 2 were wilds though. Good to see.
yep for sure - I mean we can all show our fish pics and those memories are priceless, ie:
But where we live and the scenery we have can never be taken for granted. This is an amazing part of the world and I have as much enjoyment taking in the view as I do having a screamer on the line!
naw, usually pretty good - just run in tighter to Malcolm along the kelp beds. Just note the beds extend quite far out SE of the head, but not the end of the world.
yep, all of the above - closest day I have had to going swimming was getting stuck in the inlet behind Swanson as the NW blew up (15-25 knots forecast turned out to be 30-35 and the "3 hour tour" was almost an abandon ship on Plumper Islands trying to get back to Mitchell (that was in a 17')...
we got about 8 springs....3 in the 77-80 range, couple around 8-12lb, few 5lb area. Lost another low teener at boat when it didn't matter (maxed out). Not like a couple years back, but no complaints. They were all deeper.
typically the stretch between Lizard Point and Donegal Head - loads of coho and pink there right now - coho decent size 6-8lb....oops edit: coho not exactly a draw anymore as its closed now and we didn't see a single hatch
hmm, actually, just noticed its picked up on navionics - borderline. Cuts the 500' line infront of Beecher, but runs the 545' line west of Beechey. Shouldn't be too much of a downer.
you can see the map here - wasn't able to overlay with contours, but 'looks' to be even beyond the coho trolling lanes (except for those that occasionally fish the border for them) https://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/mammals-mammiferes/whales-baleines/srkw-measures-mesures-ers-eng.html
