One of the joys of living where I do is having good numbers of birds to enjoy when they are doing their thing. I've seen all kinds of bird interactions here, ranging from an Eagle laboriously swimming across the estuary to finally crawl onto the beach with a big dead Duck in its talons to...

TRUCKS BOATS AND HELICOPTERS : PART III

I've been pondering telling this story for a bit, but it was a long time ago and I've recovered from it, so here goes. Back in mid-October of 1974 I was in my camper and parked out at Tow Hill where I had been surfing, and when I got up next morning I discovered the surf had jumped up bigtime...

TRUCKS BOATS AND HELICOPTERS : PART III

Back in 1974 I used to surf around there, both sides of Tow Hill. Used to catch Cutties at the mouth of the Hiellen river and sometimes I'd spot a Dungeness crab while I was surfing so I'd grab it and take to my camper for future reference. Fun times although I wish there had been another surfer...

    Lucky Lager

I have this sitting in front of my TV so I see it every day, and it's from the old Ritz International Hotel that used to be in Vancouver but is long since gone. When my sister bought her house at Davis Bay, in 1981, this along with a number of other beer related items were left behind by the...

Historically Important & Little Known Vessels

From 1987 until 1990 I lived at Sandspit and got to know Neil and Betty fairly well. I had breakfast with them many times in the cafe at the Sandspit Inn and enjoyed hearing their tales of Puffin Cove etc. Great couple and I relished the time I had with them. Take care.

    Tell Your Best Joke

Players from the Edmonton Oilers visited a local children's hospital just before Christmas. "It's nice to put a smile on the faces of those who are worse off than we are and who are facing a long uphill struggle," said David Wilson aged 6. Take care.

It was because of him, and a couple of others involved with the SSHRC that I quit the SSBC in 1997. I have my principles. Take care. For the record. No reflection on the SSBC of today intended by my above comment.

The late Bruce Gerhart was a Kingfisher back in the day. I fished with him a few times here on the island. That's him on the Salmon River and the fish is one of those Tsitika transplants we used to fish for on the Campbell late 80's and into the 90's. Take care.

    Old Skullcap.....Redux....

Many thanks for the kind words. I truly appreciate them. I've been looking at some of my early writing efforts recently and realize what a hack I actually am, but now and then I get some words in the correct order, and it can make sense. I have to confess that I just realized yesterday where...

Doug is one of the guys that the then existing SSBC branch here built the rest area on the Quinsam for. It's called Eric's Riffle as his loss was the original inspiration for building it, and then Doug happened. Very sad time here for those who knew him. I got to know his parents a bit back then...

    Old Skullcap.....Redux....

I may have posted this before but it's 20 plus years old so I hope someone new might enjoy it. It was the year of the big El Nino, and the spawning channel inside the Lower Island of the Campbell was dotted with small sockeye, sparkling like an assortment of Christmas ornaments, all red bodies...

When Things Come Together And People Give Back....

Back in 1996 the then existing SSBC Branch at Campbell River built a small memorial rest area on the Quinsam River called Eric's Riffle. It was a memorial for two young people lost in accidents related to steel-heading, one being Eric Hanley and the other Doug Bruce. A shelter above a swing, a...

    Lest We Forget

Both my Grandfathers served and were wounded during WW1, one at Vimy Ridge. Both my parents served during WW2, Mom in the Navy and Dad in the Air Force. I served in the Navy, 1964 to 1967. Indeed, Lest We Forget. We owe so much to those who were actually in those two World wars. So much...
