Guides get the green light

This is now getting way off topic. There is a thread for general Covid discussion and this one probably doesn't need anymore posts until the plan that has been put forth by the industry has been approved by Worksafe BC and the Health Authorities. Once that is available, we will all know what the guides and lodges will have to do to operate this summer.

I'm still intending to go on a booked charter out of Winter Harbour in second week of August - if they'll take us. We'll bring our own groceries like usual. About 60-70% of their business is Americans, so they'll have a lean season for sure. I would think the key issue is if individual guides are comfortable with the working conditions they'll face. Masks, smaller guest loads, less than perfect distancing, constant sanitising. For our part we would certainly like to support a small volume/high investment business in the fight to survive the virus. Our group is all construction contractors from the Okanagan and we are grateful for being able to continue working, and that we live in an area with almost zero infections.

As for fishing from your own boat, just go. Seriously, go. Dr Henry has said repeatedly that outdoors is always lower risk. If you're going somewhere else in BC, take your supplies with you so as not to put undue load on small town grocery stores and to limit interactions. No need to turn it into a party with a dozen other boats, just go fishing with one buddy and enjoy beautiful BC guilt free.

The SFI posted a helpful update, which is shared below. As was posted earlier, we were advised by the Province that Phase 3 would not be considered until the PHO could assess the situation after 2 full cycles or 28 days from the start of Phase 2 (May 19). That means, doing the math, you are not likely to hear about decisions regarding Phase 3 until June 16, and possibly longer.

Guides should be taking steps today to plan and prepare for their business resumption by reading the Covid-19 Safety Protocols (see the link within the SFI Update). There is a Provincial Health Order, which orders businesses to have a Covid Safety Plan posted in their businesses, and available for customers to see. WorkSafe confirmed this requirement in a webinar 2 weeks ago. Each operator is responsible to consider their specific situation, and design a Safety Plan.

Yes, there are some guides who have started guiding. They are doing so in contravention of the Provincial Health Order if they have not developed, posted and ensured their customers are aware and following the Safety Plan. The Guidelines contained in the link were developed cooperatively. The SFI worked closely with Lodges and Guides to gather input that informed development of these guidelines. We met last week asking the Province to approve their release ahead of the Phase 3 announcement because it was becoming evident some operators were proceeding with re-opening plans in the absence of Guidelines they could follow to develop their businesses Safety Plan.

Please also note that the proposed Covid timeline in the SFI update - it shows that after Phase 3 starts sometime in June if all goes well, that travel will still be restricted to BC residents in the first portion of Phase 3, then slowly loosen up to allow Canadian travel in later. No US or International travel until Phase 4, which appears from the chart to be October or later.

Obviously this is a highly fluid situation, things could change either way on relatively short notice. With that in mind, guide operators should closely examine their situation and design plans and share them with customers per the Provincial Health Order.

The other consideration should be that the Safety Plans and use of PPE's, cleaning, and social distancing should be designed in such a manner as to protect both the guide and their customers. Anyone who wants to be a cowboy on this is risking a LOT. Ask about the Covid Safety Plan and ensure everyone is safe.

As June approaches a decision regarding Chinook is still outstanding while reports are coming in that abundance is high and fishing is good in southern BC. The SFI has been constant in its communication to DFO and support for theSFAB proposals, presented in early April, and have emphasized that the approach is a balanced one that will address the conservation concerns for Fraser River Chinook yet will provide a minimum of all-important access and opportunity for the public fishery in 2020 and beyond.

BC's Restart plan continues to progress and while there is clear direction for fishing in BC, encouraging British Columbians to get out and enjoy the outdoors, there is uncertainty for many businesses wishing to resume operations safely and responsibly. The SFI has been working with the Province and WorksafeBC and make operational guidelines available today.

And Covid-19 has presented challenges for DFO in collecting adequate and all-important catch data for fisheries. Continuing in its efforts to improve information collected, the SFI has developed a plan with DFO that works with guides and Avid Anglers to record catch and sample particularly in areas where the creel survey will miss in 2020.

Fishing BC, the coop marketing program with Destination BC, seeks your feedback as how best to bring awareness to fishing in BC in 2020 and 2021.

This update includes:

OPERATION GUIDELINES FOR SPORT FISHING BUSINESSES WORKSAFEBC REVIEWED AND AVAILABLE
As noted in previous updates, the SFI developed and submitted operating and safety guidelines for sport fishing businesses to resume operation for phase 2 and 3 ofBC's Restart Plan.

WorksafeBC has now reviewed the draftBC Tidal Waters Charter, Guide, and Lodge Operations – Covid19 Guidelines. TheMay 2020 version provides guidelines and recommendations that may be modified due to changing conditions or additional review from the Provincial Health Office but is suitable for business operation locally now and in preparation for Phase 3 activities.

And, provided proper safety and behaviour guidelines are followed, consider getting out on the water locally now and plan for fishing activities in BC this summer.

TOURISM AND TIMELINES

This graphic, developed by Destination BC using regular updates and information from the Provincial Health Office and the Restart BC plan, is helpful to give a sense of timelines and expectations for business and travel locally, provincially and beyond. It should be noted that a start date for Phase 3 has not yet been announced.

TheSFI Covid-19 web page continues to be regularly updated and includes most recent guidance from the Province including recommendations and links for restaurant, food service and accommodation operations.

One outfit that has disregard for Provincial Health Authorities direction in Ucluelet and have jumped the gun. Won't mention the name of them they know who they are, it certainly doesn't go unnoticed in the community, probably not a great way to get future referrals from other businesses on the ground. Short term financial gain long term potential loss. Were almost there tourism wise on the west coast hold the line sounds like over the coming days Tourism should get direction. Below is a message from all the bands united another reason to hold the line. Pushing things could provoke a reaction that would prevent travel to the coast so those of you that aren't doing your part like the line share of businesses stop your jump the green light business and be patient or we could all be punished.

Well there we go it's official, hope the few trips some got in were worth it. Few other businesses may have contributed to the turning up of the dial prior to Phase 3 was announced. Should have been a collaborative start when Phase 3 was announced and not before. On the fishing front and jumping the green light I've seen no PPE or social distancing happening on the boats observed. This is another strike against opening up, it sucks but we are all taking a financial beating respectfully following the rules is going to contribute to the quickest opening.

R you referring specifically to your area?

I personally haven't seen it as "go time" . Most guide boats have been tied up from what I have seen

Tourism Ucluelet COVID-19 Took Kit for Visitors

In partnership with community stakeholders, Tourism Ucluelet has developed the Traveling During COVID-19 document. This excellent toolkit outlines what local businesses are doing to protect visitors and what visitors can do to protect residents.

The District and Tourism Ucluelet ask that accommodation and activity providers help keep our community safe by sharing the toolkit with clients at the time of booking.

PPE Supplies

Does your organization need more PPE? In response to the increased demand for personal protective equipment, the Government of Canada has created a new web hub for organizations looking to find resources on buying and supplying personal protective equipment. The City of Surrey is also promoting a new marketplace for PPE through www.SurreyMakesPPE.ca.

Outdoor Seating

District Staff have been working with our local restaurants to provide more space for their patrons by temporarily expanding restaurant outdoor seating areas. In the last week eight local businesses have been approved to expand their outdoor seating area.

In addition, District Staff are creating new outdoor seating areas in public spaces. You may have seen the new picnic benches in front of the Chamber of Commerce and the new street lines near Fraser Lane at Helen Road. These will provide additional places for people to enjoy take-out from local eateries, and safely enjoy the summer weather. Community members are reminded that the consumption of alcohol is still prohibited in these public places.

Recreation Recreated

The Ucluelet Recreation department launched the Ukee Airband Competition on June 8th. Link up with your pod or video yourself lip syncing your favourite song and send your creations to recreation@ucluelet.ca! Submissions must be in by Friday, June 12that 12 pm and the winner will be announced the following week. For more information about the contest visit Ukee Airband Competition website.

So I am assuming they will get the green light when we hit stage 3 and even then following the WBC rules Face mask sanitizing station and the other items in the 9 page doc ? At this point they are allowed only ultra local people ? or ?

I know of a few guides in Bamfield that has been operating for quite a while, wonder how they're getting around these issues?

Probably the same way they get around posting pics of their 2 guests with 3 limits of salmon, or 3 guests with 4 limits of halibut :rolleyes::rolleyes:
