Or try a Salt Away flushing kit - it works. It also claims to be non-toxic and biodegradable.
Vinegar solution (dilute acetic acid) also works when concentrated but you would need a lot. In small batches it works well to clean up thermostats, especially when warm. If you go with vinegar in a barrel, perhaps use warm water, then neutralize it with baking soda before draining.
