2018 Port Renfrew Reports

My brother came back yesterday and said the bay was slow: upstream it’s black with coho and springs that shot straight up after the rains. Hope you guys get some fresh fish in for the weekend.

just returned from 3 days of much less than spectacular fishing, inside & out. just a small handfull of coho. did manage a 15lb. coho inside plus a few nice black bass. weather was great , water conditions PERFECT

Went for one last shot at halibut yesterday anchoring a few miles straight out from Nitinat. The run out wasn't too bad with the easterly and ebb (which meant a nice current for fishing as well) However other than a candidate for boat record for smallest halibut (maybe 10 lbs) it was just a pleasant three hour bs session with my brother. The trip back was awful with the easterly now arguing with the flood tide. Im pretty sure the pounding in my tin boat left me two inches shorter. To add insult to injury
of the 40 or so crabs in my four traps, only one was a keeper. On to coho on Monday :)

wow! that's tiny for that derby!
Was a tough go for all, millions of shakers and coho few and far between, slowest coho fishing i seen , few fish here and there nothing big and no big numbers of them, prob up river already with the early rain in sept

There was quite afew shakers, for us mainly all Chinook. We only caught maybe 3 Coho. Great place, lots of whales to watch.

Just back from the derby, we did ok for coho, 11 lbs was our biggest hatchery but 16/17 (approx) was our biggest wild coho but on the outside, frustrating to throw it back when we knew it would have been in contention for the overall winner.
Don’t quite understand why it was held on a weekend where the next day wilds can be kept outside but overall it was a fun weeekend of fishing and out of the 60-70 shakers a majority were all hatchery, great to see the system working. Thanks to the organizers of the derby, see you next year.

Yup renfrew was a grind all weekend.
Weather was real nice on Saturday. Sunday a bit wet and choppy.

We caught 1 million shakers and small springs, 4 big mackerel, some small black cod and 4 wild coho.

Saturday coho we’re down 100-120 ft.
Sunday much shallower 35-50ft.

Good time but not very productive

Went out today, lots of small springs. Bonked a coho jack for the bbq. Bay to 650 ft. Pretty slow.

Sorry if I ask these question in the report section. My brother and I thinking of fishing Port Renfrew in summer of 2019. We fished Port Renfrew for the first time with a guide almost 18 years ago and we really like to go back and try it again in my own 19' Arima boat. Just a few questions if you don't mind me asking. Is 19' glass boat adequate for that type of water? What would be the best time to fish for Spring? I heard early to mid-August is ideal but not sure if that is the case up there. The last question, is there any cabin or resort you would recommend? My brother had a triple bypass recently and comfort is important to him. Saved some money for this trip so spending a bit more on accommodations is not much of an issue.
I really appreciate your input in advance.

Yep that is definitely a good time to go. I have a cabin there and have always liked the last week of July and most of August if you are beach fishing. That boat is more than adequate for that area and lots of smaller boats fish the area regularly. As far as rentals goes there are lots of options now compared to your last visit there. A great place to fish and lots of rentals to pick from.
