What hobbies will you be taking on now that the era of recreational fishing is coming to an end?

How about we all just get involved with enhancement projects wherever and whenever possible. Many of us that are now involved are getting on in age. The feds will never do enough to insure there are any fish for the future.

As the future is basically done for us you cant beat your chest ,yell and scream fact is DUMB DUMD dodough has proven he doesnt care about us one bit out here in west. facts are facts its very very sad .We will have memories what it used to be like to fish on the west coast....

That is too bad your giving up. Sad really. Your honestly the last one I thought would throw towel in that soon. I hope you don't.

Starting plan B in effect as I dont want to be caught If/when **** comes down pipe...Its not sad its facts has nothing to do with emotion
Ill make that kinda decision in the fall. And its not throwing in the towel ... after fighting these clowns for close to 30 years you can only take so much ...it all starting way back in the days when I guided knight inlet and they wanted to Seine it .
My boss made a deal with them to do DNA,scale samples logs, took us like a hour each morning and each evening as we had to fill viles and scale samples.
they checked on us every month MANY man hours then we found out they did nothing with all that data. probably still sitting on the shelf somewhere????

Well, I’ve been planning to retire to the island since I was 30. Saved for it my whole life. Even when I couldn’t afford it I made sure I put some away. In the last 15 years, I’ve built a pretty good home based fab/welding shop and invested a ton of money in my ambulance, stockpiled a ton of SS tubing and other supplies all in preparation for when I turn 55. Was gonna haul it all down there and spend my golden age fishing and making stuff that makes other fisherman happy.

I’m not saying I’m throwing in the towel either. And I’ve got 4 more years to see what happens, but I’m certainly rethinking my options.

I might open a fish farm.

Seriously though, the groups pushing this have been at it for years now, many people on this forum supporting them without taking a step back and thinking about the motives.

If you think you can fight this and stop a near coast wide shut down, you may as well go and find a brick wall to bang your head against. My bet is they will tout the massive closures coming as a victory that other countries around the world should mirror. It’s how these cretans work.

Anyway, good topic.

I'm hunting for a spouse, need a "special one", no limits, no seasons, no species, no area or size restrictions. Also she must have a bigger boat than mine and a truck.

Lets hope so, Conservatives did nothing for the resource but never blamed us fully and took our sport away, sorry reallocated to others. All I ask is for a Gov who listens to its real specialists, (not Suzuki BS), science, professionals and implements laws, rules and regulations that increase for ALL what we love so much. (The fish)

I'm not giving up on fishing. DFO has a history of being wrong and of mismanagement. Attack DFO credibility. They cherry-pick weak science. They have a history of failures. We just need to throw up a storm of alternate narratives with emotional appeal and employ diversion and distraction tactics.

The good news is most orcas are doing well, except for the SR pods. These are also the pods that are being harassed by whale watchers and poisoned by effluent in Puget Sound and from the Fraser. The Chinook returns are a separate issue. Any correlation made is not the same as causation and causation is not supported by good science. Only by DFO's weak suspicions.

More good news is that even the avid recreational fishermen catch relatively few fish, even fewer Chinook and spend relatively few days on the water. Again, the good science to back up area closures based on the impact of rec fishers, is absent. Rec fishers have followed the rules set by DFO over the years so any difficulties can be placed squarely as chronic mismanagement of our fishery by DFO.

More good news: DFO is vulnerable to public, political and media pressure. We need to keep up and amplify that pressure. Good news stories of contribution and successes in stewardship by fishers will deflect and distract from the doom and gloom narrative coming from DFO. Scapegoating fishermen never fixed a problem. Remind the public of the results of DFO mismanagement both here and on the East coast. DFO has devoted time and resources to cheer-leading fish farms rather than managing wild stocks. Diverting negative attention away from responsible fishers and back on to DFO, where it belongs, may be the long-term, best solution for whales, fish and fishers.
