The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle assessed lower Lambert Channel,
Southern Hornby Island and Nile creek areas last night and this morning. A set
was attempted but not successful. Weather will likely hamper assessment
activities today and possibly tomorrow.

Looked like some spawn at the ramp point Holmes today wen I drove by. Some colour in the water and high density of birds on the beach eating.

Be on the lookout for fuel on the water or on the beach and report it to Regional Joint Operations Centre at 250-363-5848.

Officials with the Department of National Defence say one of its vessels in the Strait of Georgia — HMCS Calgary — spilled 30,000 litres of fuel on Saturday morning.

The frigate has served in the Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Navy since 1995.

In a news release, the Canadian Forces said its Maritime Forces (Pacific) have responded to the spill and are working with Environment Climate Change Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, Transport Canada and BC Emergency Management to assess its impact.

HMCS Calgary — spilled 30,000 litres of fuel on Saturday morning.

Comedic gold that its the HMCS Calgary, On the bright side the military did it so it will have a very good response.

The herring spawn might have just dodged a bullet.
I would not say for sure at this point but just maybe.
It's not funny wmy and there will be no cleanup.

February 25, 2018 - 8:25 pm

An estimated 30,000 L of fuel was released from HMCS Calgary between the hours of 3am and 8am on February 24, 2018 during a re-fueling operation. HMCS Calgary is a Halifax frigate with the Canadian Navy.

The spill was reported to have started near Parksville and ended approximately 100km southeast, just west of Tsawassen.

Transport Canada flight 951 flew the ship's route and surveyed potential impact areas and no sheen was observed.

Environment Canada developed a dispersion and trajectory model which indicated that there would likely be no impact to shorelines. Environment Canada calculations predicted a quick dispersion of the fuel due to sea conditions and the continuous movement of the vessel during the release.

The Department of National Defense had aircraft and resources in the area today and has organized several vessels to continue searching the sea and shoreline for signs of fuel tomorrow.

B.C. Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy has response staff participating in additional field observations tomorrow in coordination with the Department of National Defense and Canadian Coast Guard.

The next update will be provided when new information is available.

Highly doubt yelloweye are sucking eggs of kelp fronds while there is tonnes and tonnes of live herring to be had in th same area

the First Nations in Bella Bella have had the right idea about harvesting herring roe for many, many years. When I worked there 30 some odd years ago they were sinking full size fir trees in the areas where the herring spawned then come back and hoist the tree on to the deck of a seiner and voila there's all the herring roe! that way the herring don't have to be killed so they can still provide food for everything else in the food chain above them!

A friend wants to see the herring spawn event on Hornby when she visits there this weekend. Is the timing good, or would another area be better this weekend?

I was a deckhand in the gillnet fishery in the late 1980's , What a gong show , hard work , no sleep ,go go go till quota done .

Fish are still not ready to spawn.. but that can change very quickly....

Thanks very much, Cuba. Will pass that on to my friend. If there's no spawning yet this weekend, at least there'll be lots of other wildlife to see.
It's an amazing event to witness from shore. So many eagles, seabirds, sea lions, and seals; they sure make a racket!
