2016 Alberni Inlet

people seem to be all doom and gloom already... most years, hardly anyone dips a line before June 15.

Sure, last years test sets were large and this year is supposed to be large again... Comparing this June 15 to a regular June 15 for sockeye, I'd say there are already more fish up the river than usual... might just be the conditions of high flow and cool weather slowing down the rec success!?

We're on our way right now as well, just tonight and tomorrow. Let you know how we do tomorrow night!

FN0541-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Seine - Sockeye - Area B - Area 23 - Alberni Inlet - Opening June 20, 2016

The involvement of the Area B seine fleet in the Alberni Inlet sockeye fishery
is dependent on the Area B Seine Harvest Committee developing and implementing
a fishing plan that limits the harvests of sockeye to weekly target
allocations. This fishing opportunity is possible due to the cooperation
between Fisheries Management staff and the Area B Harvest Committee to actively
manage this weekly fishing plan.

As a result, Area B vessel masters and vessels must have a valid 2016 Area B
Seine Licence and also be designated by their representative Working Group body
and subsequently by the Area B Harvest Committee to participate in this
fishery.

This fishery will not proceed should undesignated seine vessels attend or
attempt to participate in this fishery.

The target catch for this opening is 30,000 sockeye.

The 2016 pre-season estimate of run size for Somass sockeye is for a return
between 700,000 to 1,000,000 fish. The pre-season working forecast used to
determine catch targets is 1,000,000. The commercial allocation for Seine and
Gill Net at this run-size is 323,678. Seine allocation is 194,213. Gill net
allocation is 129,475. Gill net catch to date is approximately 44,000. Run-
size review and re-forecast will take place June 23.

Area 23 - Alberni Inlet

Seines open from 10:00 hours Monday, June 20 to 10:00 hours Wednesday June 22,
2016 or until the target catch is reached whichever occurs first, in the
following areas:

- In that portion of Subarea 23-1 bounded in the north by a line from Polly
Point to Stamp Point and in the south by a line from Dunsmuir Point light to a

West on the west side of Alberni Inlet north of China Creek; and

- In that portion of Subarea 23-2 bounded on the north by a line from the Light
at Hocking Point then drawn easterly 90 degrees true to a point on the opposite
shore located at 49 degrees 05.260 minutes north and 124 degrees 49.158 minutes
West and, bounded on the south by a line beginning on the east side of Alberni
Inlet at the Red Flashing Navigational Light located at 48 degrees 59.332
minutes north and 124 degrees 53.489 minutes West then westerly across the
Inlet to the opposite shore to a point located at 49 degrees 59.562 minutes
north and 124 degrees 53.933 minutes West.

Please note: For Henderson conservation the 23-2 southern boundary is different
than the one used at the beginning of the season in 2015.

Minimum bunt mesh size is 70 mm. The minimum net length is 270 metres and a
minimum depth of 20 metres. The maximum net length is 400 metres and a maximum
depth of 52 metres. The target species is sockeye. Coho, pink, chum, chinook
and steelhead may not be retained.

All catch must be brailed and the use of power skiffs is approved.

Variation Order No. 2016-SAL-23-SN-01

Notes:

For 2016 there are mandatory logbooks and dockside monitoring for all sockeye
seine openings in Alberni Inlet. Please contact JO Thomas and Associates to
arrange for dockside monitoring at 1-866-930-4000 and phone 1-877-280-3474 to
obtain a Logbook. Fishers must hail their catch to a service provider within
24 hours of the closure of the fishery.

Fishers participating in this fishery should read their Licence Conditions
carefully. There are some changes to the conditions of licence for 2016/2017.
Please refer to the Conditions of 2016/2017 Salmon Area B Licence and fishery
notice FN0521 for a complete description of these changes.

A large recreational fleet is expected to be fishing in and near the areas open
to seine fishing. Vessel masters are requested to avoid fishing near
concentrations of recreational vessels and to travel at slow speed to minimize
wake height when transiting through the recreational fishery.

DFO Port Alberni may request catch updates by radio. Please advise Test-
fishing vessel Nita Maria of catch if requested.

We got 11 of our 12 this morning, tons of boats at nahmint(looked like 50 or more). We fished Macktush and had it almost to ourselves. Lots of fish Jumping everywhere in the canal and lots of fish getting cleaned at the cleaning station. You have to fish hard for your limits but there attainable.

Most of our fish came at around 8-9 am in 30-50 feet of water. We had a triple and two doubles in that time.

Thanks for the report EFG! Any particular gear work best? Green flasher/small pink hootchie/ short leader set up?

Orange and green flasher on the top rods(around 30 feet on the rigger) produced about the same, 24inch fluorocarbon leader with small pink hoochie. Make sure it has a trailer hook, all I heard on the radio all day was guys kept loosing fish, we only lost one.

Epic Soc fishing the last 3 days at Namint on the Canal... Get out and use any small pink hoochie and you'll limit out.
ONLY PROBLEMS ; Seiners going out!
SOLUTION ; fish another location
The Socs are everywhere seaside of the Narrow to at least 10 mile ( and probably further but we didn't try because we limited out at 10 mile lol)
Good luck and remember fast real on the Socs!!!!

Great Sockeye fishing at Nahmint today. Got 12 and lost about 20. Had grand daughter and her friend reel in their first sockeye. Flat calm all morning, got all the fish on red flasher pink hoochie 20 in leader.

Fished Saturday and today and both days left China Creek at 5 and was back at the dock by 7:30 with are 12 Sockeye. Lots of nice sized ones this year. Nice to be done early and back at camp for a nice breakfast and the rest of the day to hang with family. Even hit the car show in Qualicum on the way home. Great Fathers Day weekend.

Fished this weekend both days. Overall fishing seemed spotty to me got 4 sox Saturday and 3 on Sunday. Some fishers appeared to be doing very well while others did very poorly. Fished Sproat Narrows to Nahmint. Fish were caught 15-45 feet, green flashers, pink hoochie, 24" leader. Seemed like would get 2-3 bites one after the other then nothing for a couple hours. Lost lots of fish on the saturday.

How far back are you guys putting the trailing hook? I have been fishing with 2 5/0 singles ~ 2" apart? Usually I have no problems with this but my loss percentage seems really high>?>>>

Fished Nahmint yesterday evening and this morn. Got our limit yesterday and were one short of our limit this morning . Pink & black hoochie, purple uv flasher on a 24" leader. Fished between 20'-40' and had a lot of action. Lost just as many as we caught but all were a great size.
