Herring spawn reports?

Hey tubber that works too, but it's a lot of fun to jig them, kids love it, can be non stop action at times...........:)

Went out with the grand kids today (4 & 6) over to the east side of Denman and settled in with a flock of birds and some sea lions feeding, and the kids jigged up a half a bucket. What a hoot, was non stop for them. They figured out how to catch more than one at at time too. lol

There was another boat close by when we pulled up. They noticed the little kids on board and came over right away to see if we wanted any herring rigs for the kids. Pretty cool gesture.

There are industry test vessels and the DFO charter vessel the Denman Isle
assessing stocks and sampling in the Strait of Georgia this morning.
There have been three test sets this morning in Baynes Sound, which ranged from
8.5% to 10.5%. When the fish are acceptable and also if there is a request to
open the area, DFO will contact all the pool captains prior to opening the
area. The area would open once the setting boats for each pool have been
verified. There will be a seine pool captains meeting in Deep Bay this
afternoon to discuss fishery set up and assessment options.

There was a spawn flight today form Nanaimo to Little River, no spawn was
observed.

rumour has it there is little interest in Japan in gillnet roe herring this year as there is lots of product left over from 2014-very low price. Many GN pools not even going out. Fish left in the water?

that's correct. our pool usually has 350 ton once all the licenses are bought, this year only 100 ton and its only one boat doing it instead of 5 which is why im typing this right now instead of being out there. similar story across the board for the GN fleet I think with about 2/3 or more not fishing. on the plus side this cant be a bad thing for the stocks.

You hate being wrong don't you, check TODAYS Fisheries Notice.

Seems you want to make a pissing match out of everything-- perhaps you need remedial reading lessons?

There was a spawn overflight conducted on February 23 from Nanaimo to Seal Bay,
two very small spot spawns seen on Denman Is near Fillongley Park, lots of bird
and sea lion activity along the shore from the ferry crossing north to Komas
bluff. The no spawn was observed on the spawn flight yesterday. Next flight
planned for Feb 27 at 11:00 hrs.

I was told the commerials got an opening at 2:30 today

Grocery stores were really busy this morning with fishermen stocking up on food saying the had a 2:30 opening.

Full blown spawn just outside deep bay this afternoon. Jigged a solid pail. What an amazing sight!

Launched at union bay. Ran north, all the way around Denman & Hornby (just because). Jigged 40-50 on the South East side of Hornby, until the wind came up. Then ran to the Vancouver Island side off the trailer park/deep bay cabins around 3.30 yesterday afternoon. Jigging with sabiki rigs in 15ft of water in the milky spawn. Kids filled the five gallon bucket in half an hour. We saw one seiner test fishing, but everyone else was just handing around, waiting.

This was my first time doing this, and I am kicking myself for not doing it 15yrs ago, and every year since. The wildlife show (sea lions, seals, otters, eagles and everything else) is awesome. It is so much better than watching it from shore. Look out spring salmon! This bait will be so sexy they will be lining up to eat it.

There was a spawn at deep bay, but there were still quite a few big schools in mid channel in deeper water. The sea lions were munching heavy on these. It makes me think that this was the first part of the spawn, but it will keep happening for the next week(s)?

Thanks Bugs, a picture is worth a thousand words! Going out tomorrow, any suggestions where to go. Did you jig them?
