The WCVI Coho bulletin has just been released for 2020.

The outlook for Coho has been downgraded to "Low Status" compared to "Moderate Status" in the last few years. The fishery management response will be to reduce WCVI wild Coho retention limits to 1/day for inshore waters of the WCVI for the recreational fishery. A fishery notice implementing this change will be forthcoming in the next week or two.

Subject: FN0693-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Coho - Reduction in Daily Limits for Inshore Areas of the West Coast of Vancouver Island - July 16, 2020

Stock Assessment has downgraded the Outlook for West Coast of Vancouver Island Coho stocks this year from moderate to low. Consequently, under the WCVI Coho abundance
management regime, the daily limits for Coho in WCVI inshore areas are reduced as follows:

Area 22 (Nitinat Lake)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 – Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Subareas 23-1 to 23-3 (Alberni Inlet)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours July 31, 2020 - Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Effective 00:01 hours August 1 until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 – Four (4) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Subareas 23-4 to 23-11 (Barkley Sound)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 - Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Area 24 (Clayoquot Sound)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 - Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Subareas 25-1 to 25-3, 25-6 to 23-16 (Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 - Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Subareas 25-4 to 25-5 (Tlupana Inlet)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 - Four (4) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Area 26 (Kyuquot Sound)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 - Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Subareas 27-1 to 27-3, 27-5 to 27-11 (Quatsino Sound)

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2020 - Two (2) Coho per day, one (1) of which may be unmarked.

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal waters of British Columbia.

The term "marked" means a hatchery fish that has a healed scar in place of the adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the Salmon Sport Head Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped Chinook and Coho
salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head Recovery Program toll free at (866)
