Slot limit announced....

“Some First Nations leaders support the restrictions and are calling the current crisis a “salmon state of emergency.”

“We fully support the call from the Fraser Salmon Management Council that all recreational and commercial fisheries fishing Fraser River salmon stocks immediately stop and any contemplated recreational and commercial fishery, including catch and release, not take place until after it is determined that all salmon have safe access around the slide area and that any such openings only be considered after conservation and First Nations priority needs are met,” says Grand Chief Stewart Phillip in a release.”

https://www.citynews1130.com/2019/0...ce-after-rockslide-threatens-spawning-salmon/

This is the entire agenda, plain and simple! Nobody will get the chance to put a line in the water. FNs want all of it. Justin and his clowns are giving this to them hoping that this will ease their way through the pipeline approvals. This is all political BS.
Clearly based on this the plan is to ban recreational as well as commercial fishing using a unrelated rockslide to justify it. How can it ever be said that “all salmon have safe access around the slide area”, it can’t. It’s a goal that can’t be met and it’s a goal that has just been made up thanks to an event that took place. The Grand Chief says opening should only be considered after conservation and First nations priority are met, does this mean there will be no FN sales of fish?

If someone can prove to me that if my area around Sidney ever opens, I’m catching fish only because they can’t make it up the Fraser, I apologize! Pure BS that uninformed will be fed from FN and the ENGO’s.

With emails like this sent to government officials, along with the other posts in this thread about just ignoring the restrictions and taking the fish you want, you are not helping the cause of recreational fishers.
Go ahead and pander to these pricks, where has it gotten us so far, i have written far too many letters to count and all being nice and polite and what has it gotten me SFA!!!

Perhaps the solutions are are little more complicated than you believe. But if it’s all so simple, perhaps you need to run for office. Persuade people to elect you and then you can make the easy decisions. So easy to be an armchair quarterback, write letters and swear.

Don't know you from a bump on a log, @Saxe Point , but some of us on here have been working with or fighting DFO for decades, commercial and recreational. That effort was always to preserve and promote salmon and other species.

This latest clusterfuck is a breaking point for many of us.

Yes, blowing off some steam by sending a colorful letter to an UNASHAMED LIAR, is not helpful, other than it reduces the pressure somewhat.

Wilkinson is a liar, he is a trained seal that barks and does tricks when told. He deserves every colorful letter he receives.

This is taken from a story in the Globe rag about the slide.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/can...9QwDI2SxfwTo3iRqAL8P4cgm_wnPhHaY7rFnggyVZcA54

“Gerald Michel is lands and resources co-ordinator with the Xwisten Indian Band, located downriver from the slide.

His community, already worried about declining salmon stocks, curtailed fishing last week after learning of the slide, Mr. Michel said. The slide has added to worries about the impacts of fish farming on wild stocks,” he said.

Funny!!! How does one curtail something that our elected officials said is not happening!!

Guess those are not relative fish in relative area.

Ugh

Its unfortunate that with all this discussion the fact that salmon stocks are extremely low is not on the radar. if you want to get all butt hurt and blame first nations for all the problems don't do it as fisherman. this liberal government has done what governments have done forever which is looking to the next election not long term for salmon or for future fisherman. I have seen more white folks snagging fish and poaching then first nation people 10 fold, and the bands near where I live have responded to lower numbers by taking less and fishing less. No government will ever listen to a group blaming a different race for them not being able to get their share which 10 is more than enough for the freezer. These closures are arbitrary and heavy handed but unfortunately necessary, go to a river this fall where you would expect to see some healthy returns of wild chinook and see for yourself. It wont be long until they are nearly extinct if nothing changes, based on historical numbers they are nearly extinct and average size today compared to even ten years ago is much smaller. if dfo wanted a solution that makes sense they would allow hatchery retention but no wild fish period, its time to let wild stocks recover to healthy sustainable levels and move the pressure to the clones. kind of like using the last bit of fossil fuels to get off fossil fuels to save the earth before its too late.
You’re right about one thing... FN don’t need to poach. They’ve been legally pillaging the river all spring.

There is only 1 ending for all this. Only people fishing will be FN and that is the plan all along. We can complain, email, write letters, boycott, even blockade the breakwater but NOTHING will matter. In the end the FN will own all, run all, rape all and sporties, and commercial interests will be banned or pay the FN to participate. Maybe at one point when enough people say NO and stand up then some serious **** will happen to reset/repeat history. Until then golf or maybe go to the FN casino's....

Sold my golf membership this year.

Should have sold the boat.

Glad you agree with me. Vigorous exercise is better way to reduce pressure without being unhelpful.

Last night I indeed reached my breaking point, vented and said some things I normally would not have. This has been a very difficult season for me and I have went to protests and devoted a lot of my time to this.

The reason why we are so mad is:

"Owen Bird, executive director of the Sport Fishing Institute of B.C., said he was "bewildered" by the new restrictions, which build upon previously announced conservation measures.

"The whole reason that the measures were put into place in the first place was to ensure that the Fraser River chinook had made it by and were in the river by that time," he said.

"We were coming up to this date. The fish, indeed, are for the most part in the river. ... It's not really a defensible action on scientific grounds.""

And you think expletive laden emails along with calls for defiance of the law will improve things? What world are you living in?
I am a law abiding clean speaking 71 year old and I am P——d off with this f———-g DFO and minister I don’t see your way working and agree that everyone has a breaking point I hope everyone who possibly can turn up Monday I might just go out and try and find a Tyee to bonk after! Oh I don’t even need a Tyee to be unlawful just a 16 pounder

From pacific anglers blog

https://www.pacificangler.ca/pacific-angler-friday-fishing-report-july-12-2019/

Well sorry for the late report today. I didn’t want to send out the report until I knew what the regulation changes were going to be come July 15th. I had it on good authority that DFO was not going to honour their opening on the 15th to 1 chinook per day and to expect an announcement on Friday afternoon. We didn’t know if it was going to be a continuation of the no chinook retention regulations, a hatchery only regulation, or a size restriction. The email finally came out at 4:30 and the regulation is a size restriction. In all the areas that were slated to open up on July 15th, they will indeed do so, but the chinook must be larger than 62cm but cannot be greater than 80 cm. So effectively it is a slot limit of 62-80 cm. Here is the DFO announcement and their reasoning behind it.

DFO News Release

The problem I have with this decision is multi faceted. First off they could have easily made it one under 80 cm and one hatchery chinook over 80 cm. This would allow you to keep some of these large hatchery chinook that we are catching that have absolutely nothing to do with interior Fraser River stocks of concern. They are from the USA or are from local hatchery programs, not the interior chinook the DFO keeps talking about.

Below is a picture of a nice hatchery fish we landed just yesterday that measured out at 23 pounds and is starting to get a touch darker. This is not an interior Fraser chinook of concern. In fact it was hooked inside of Howe Sound and odds are it is a hatchery fish on its way back to the Cheakamus. No scientific or logical reason for this fish not to be harvested and it was well over 80 cm in length.

large hatchery chinook would have to go back under the regs coming out on Monday. Complete mismanagement!
Secondly the interior chinook stocks of concern are all above the slide now. That is why they have the opening date of July 15th. If there was truly a concern, why did they already have the date set for the 15th and why has their been 94 gill nets openings in the Fraser for First Nations since April 19th?

Once again DFO is allowing other user groups to have direct impact on endangered stocks while they use the user group that encounters these same stocks at less than 1% as a media tool. They have to look proactive, so lets put in a slot limit to manage the 1%. This action will literally have 0 impact on chinook numbers approaching the slide. That big push of fish is long gone and had to get past 94 gill net openings. Managing us for a further 15 days in the marine environment is truly going to have no impact, but it does make for a great press release for them. Meanwhile they have no plans on how to actually save these chinook. They will manage them into the ground as they have other runs.

The third thing about all this is that we shouldn’t even be talking about this. The science shows that we should have been open for 2 a day all April, May and June as our impact on stocks of concern is historically 1% or less. Don’t forget that fact. At the very least it could have been hatchery only in that time period and there were lots of those fish around, it would have worked out, but we didn’t even get that.

So where can you retain chinook come Monday morning? Well for our local waters you can keep 1 a day from 62-80 cm in Area 28 and Area 17 and some parts of Area 29. So check out these maps, get educated and get fishing. One thing you should do is update your map card as it will show management area lines and RCAs and Sponge Reef Closures.

Here is the actual DFO verbiage:

Strait of Georgia – North – Areas 13 to 17, Area 28 and Subareas 29-1 and 29-2: 00:01 hours July 15 to 23:59 hours July 31, 2019, 1 Chinook per day with a maximum size limit of 80 cm; 00:01 hours August 1 to 23:59 hours August 29, 2019, 1 Chinook per day; 00:01 hours August 30 to 23:59 hours December 31, 2 Chinook per day.

There are other areas that will open, but I referenced ones that are relevant to our local spots. To find out what other areas are open you will need to look at the area map for your region and attached regulations. DFO Management Areas.

Who actually thinks that on Friday July 26 we don’t get another slap on the nuts.
What will it be? More of the same? Or worse?
Pretty sure it will be worse.
Will come down to Poor FN did not get enough opportunity on sockeye after not getting enough opportunities on the summer Chinook. Shazam ! We will just **** the rec fishery some more He’ll let’s close the area G late summer/fall troll(if that even exists anymore????) so we can reallocate the fall run fish to make it up for you .

I will be pleasantly surprised if we go back to the original August and then slightly better Sept plan .

What a ******* mess

I have received some personal responses and some form letters. I don’t waste my time tho writing Wilkinson.

PMO office, MP and MP candidates are my
Targets.

If you email the PMO office it will eventually get forwarded to DFO but you get the added benefit of one of PMO lackeys dealing with it.

You may also want to email the new Fraser river First Nation council and let them no that your cancelling trips where you spend money at First Nation owner business in the island.

Nog. Do you guys even have that August fisher anymore? Was that the one they made plug only in hopes helping you all avoid interior Fraser Coho??
