Put in a few hours in the Harbour today. 3 very undersized and 2 barely undersized, lots of bait but nothing for dinner ... apparently that means we are going out for a nice dinner tonight. Went back and forth thru the bait ball in the image 4 times and and tried all depths in it ... the ball was so thick and active that each time thru it the lines were shaking like crazy. Beautiful out there today.

In the harbour also today. Found a couple similar bait balls. Picked up two just undersize right in the mud on small spoons. Was in the dark red North River. What a great day out there... warm, calm, not crowded.

Hit up west Bowen for the first trip out for 2019. Had two hits that didn't stick and lost one about halfway to the boat before we landed one just under and one just over which had been feeding on ~4-in anchovies. Most hits were right off bottom, but had one at 175' in ~225' of water just after turning around at the end of our tack.

No shots of the bait balls on the sounder today, but here’s one from the orca show on the way out.

Was out Saturday morning and nothing but shakers.

9 in fact, beauty day calm and mild.

The harbour out past Spanish and to the bell, 15 others or so. Didn’t see any nets out.

Wee gee with a salty dawg and a 2.5 pesca spoon with herring aid flasher.

Ready for a fight.

Planning to get out tomorrow and fish the harbor. Any one been out lately to send a quick report? Has crabbin recovered from all the harvesting by the commis? Tried different spots before Xmas and only got a few little ones.

All I have heard is to leave the crab traps at home for now. Prawning is good

Today was close to perfect on the water. We went for an aquatic road trip to Saltspring. Left the dock in the harbour at 8:25am, crossed the flat calm strait, stopping to talk to the sea lions for a few minutes on the Galiano side of Porlier Pass on the way, and then landing at Saltspring at 925am just after the fog on that side had finishing burning off. Spent a few hours on land on that side and took a drive to see the damage caused by the recent windstorm (yikes!).

Turned around and came back this afternoon and dropped the lines at 2:45pm for a quick fish at Porlier on the way and managed to quickly box one nice little keeper and then lost our first big winter spring of the season (the better creature won the battle) before quickly pulling up and crossing the flat calm strait again, this time as the sun was setting off to the side of us.

Not sure there was a better place in the world to be today.

Did you talk to those sea lions with a machine gun?

No ... but I think someone else must have as there were about 1/4 as many as there were at the same time last year. The much better half was the partner on the boat today and the much better half likes to see and talk to the sea lions, so we saw and talked the seal lions. As they say, happy wife means happy life (and happy wife means husband gets to fish on the way home).

There were some fish around English Bay Friday morning. We got into a handful, surprisingly only one under in the bunch. Snatched one out of the jaws of a seal without damage, unfortunately lost two more to those same jaws. A slingshot might have turned the tide on one of the others, darnit.
Another in the boat was over ten pounds which was nice. Beauty day, and saw both the other two boats fishing the area score too. Usual winter tactics for us with small spoons.

Dropped the traps in the harbor and fished the 1st marker to the bell and Q. Lots of bait balls around the Bell area. Had two hits, one undersized that was gently released and a scrappy one that didn’t stick. 80 and 95’ on the rigger with 3.5” Skinny G spoon.

Had two legal size crabs and a bunch of undersized in the traps after a 4-5 hrs soak. All in all, a gorgeous afternoon in the harbor.
