They are looking for a name for the bridge. My suggestion is as long as it took to get to this point so maybe appropriate. The Over Budget Over Due Puddle Jumping Bridge.

I am not sure that would be a problem for the current council. They might well install a little steel mesh over the last foot and say the bridge is now for bikes only, - they love bikes.
