Port Renfrew Reports 2015

Sounds like you guys are doing okay down your way lots of fish stacked up around Ukee right now you will probably start to get some of them passing through in the next week or so. For soft biters make sure your hooks are sharp and run a trailing hook and the hook up ratio will drastically improve. Last year along the beach for us was like that started running a trailing hook and it made a huge difference. Haven't fished out of Renfrew for years used to quite a bit as a kid with the fam, cut plug and a banana weight tight to the shoreline at campers for nice size chins and 10 minutes straight out from the can pink squirts and quick troll used to sleigh the pinks lol. We ran a 16 double eagle and a 17 whaler back in the day with no problem and used to fish Bamfield and Nit Nat gap in a 12 ft aluminum with a 9.9 no problem a 16 ft no problem it's a short run. Make sure you have a compass and chart at least as the fog rolls into Renfrew. We use to run out past the can with no electronics and just head NE on the compass to get to the mouth the red can noise also helps. Good luck have many good memories out there.

fished the beach tuesday-thurs am. 4 springs - mid-teens to 25#. lost another at the boat and a screamer yesterday morning who peeled line. double header on tuesday - one on a peanut butter head and sooke special flasher and the other on an andrew p green spoon and peetz flasher which tells me that when the bite is on it doesn't really matter what gear is in the water. all on the slack and at different depths in 55-65 feet of water. put the gear in the water at the rock pile and trolled up past logan and back. not many boats out wed and even fewer yesterday. lots of wild coho and retained one hatchery especially out deeper on a tideline. no pinks, oddly, although talked to others who fought lots of pinks at camper. did not fish the bank but judging from the radio reports, lots of fish were being caught deep out there.

Back from Renny

Just come back from 3 days fishing in PR. Fishing the shore was ok, we got 4 springs (8-12 lbs) at East Point the first day, next 2 days fished Walbran and Camper and got 9 more springs from 10-22 lbs. Used anchovies only, fished mostly 40-60 ft. Bites were short and infrequent. While these fish weren't that big they sure fought well for their size - lots of fun! (but did they throw some hooksets).

Also the road was still closed from PR to Lake Cowie due to the forest fire just past Lizard Lake.

Not a report but a quick question. Heard that there are suppose to be some heavy winds off Haida Gaui next couple of days. How might this influence Port Renfrew, winds, swells etc. Moore at Mill Bay, was told might be best to remove boat. Any advice appreciated.

I have found the tiger prawn hoochie works very very well also coho killers, Williams darty spoons and small g-force spoons in either green and white or blue and silver will get em. Basically want lots of action in the gear. 40-60 feet most of the time you will find them!
